You might need a tall glass of ice cold milk to wash down these extra-gooey cookie bars! Our Ooey-Gooey Chewies have all the sweet, crunchy, and ooey-gooey-chewy you've ever wanted.

What You'll Need

  • 1 (11-ounce) bag caramels
  • 1 (5-ounce) can evaporated milk, divided
  • 1 (15.25-ounce) package chocolate cake mix
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 1/2 cup chopped pecans, divided
  • 1 cup flaked coconut

What to Do

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  2. In a small saucepan, melt caramels in 1/3 cup evaporated milk over low heat, stirring occasionally until smooth. Set aside.

  3. In a large bowl, mix together remaining evaporated milk, the cake mix, and butter.

  4. Press half the batter into bottom of an ungreased 9- x 13-inch baking pan. Bake 10 minutes, or until set. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and 1 cup pecans, and top with coconut and the caramel mixture, spreading to edges of pan. Top evenly with teaspoonfuls of remaining cake batter. Sprinkle with remaining nuts. Bake 20 to 25 minutes.

  5. Cool pan on a wire rack then cut into bars.

I don't like coconut. Has anyone made these without? Should I add something for moistness?

Hello! This recipe can be made without coconut and it will still be moist. Enjoy!

messed up recipe which was my fault from not reading the directions correctly and it still came out great. Makes me think of German Choc. cake. Very easy to make and smelled wonderful. Very moist and gooey!! Huge hit.

I love chewy bars like this with lots of chocolate and nuts. Reading the recipe, I kept wondering if some peanut butter could be incorporated into this. It's great the way it is, though, since the mix of chocolate, pecans, and caramel makes for a delightful treat. The only thing that could possibly improve this would be a scoop of ice cream on top.

Okay, so these sound like a dangerous combination of my favorites--caramel, chocolate, pecans, and coconut. Is this like a giant pan of turtle candies?! I hope so. We will enjoy these gooey chewies on Father's Day when I serve pulled pork and coleslaw, and these treats for dessert.

I made these raskles around 700pm tonight and before bedtime. Like a magician POOF they were gone. Thanks team.

I literally had to walk away from the cookie platter. These chewies are dee-lish! They are easy to grab and go, and kind of like a brookie (when a brownie meets a cookie). If only I had a bowl of ice cream to pair these with I would have gone to town. Try them!

Loved these! The combination of the coconut, caramel, pecans, and chocolate was perfect! They were definitely ooey, gooey, and chewy!!

I made these for a girls night and everyone went nuts and wanted the recipe! They were so chewy and amazingly delicious! I was just happy that everyone finished them because I would have eaten the whole pan if there were any leftover!

These are my new favorite cookie bars! They really are gooey, chewy, and absolutely delicious. Everyone who tried them fell in love and I'll definitely be making them again again again. Thanks, Mr. Food Test Kitchen!

What do you mean by "chocolate cake mix with pudding"? I don't understand.

Hi there! Many packages of cake mix contain pudding, and say it on the box, but we've edited the recipe since it isn't necessary. (They'll still be really ooey, gooey, and chewy!) Enjoy!

Made these for family get-together and they were a big hit. Everyone wanted the recipe!!!
