Hamburger Meal in One

What You'll Need:
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup crushed butter-flavored crackers
  • 1/4 cup chili sauce
  • 2 large potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 green and/or red bell peppers, cut into 1-inch chunks
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 (10-1/2-ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
What To Do:
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Coat four 12- x 18-inch pieces of aluminum foil with cooking spray.
     
  2. In a medium bowl, combine ground beef, cracker crumbs, and chili sauce; mix well. Form into 8 patties; set aside.
     
  3.  Top each piece of foil with equal amount of potatoes, onion, and bell pepper. Sprinkle evenly with salt and pepper.
     
  4. Place 2 patties over each pile of vegetables and top each with an equal amount of soup. Seal each foil packet and place on a large baking sheet.
     
  5. Bake 30 to 40 minutes, or until beef is no longer pink and vegetables are tender.
Notes

To cook these on the grill, preheat the grill to medium-high heat, place packets on grill rack, cover, and cook 15 to 20 minutes, or until meat is no longer pink.

I made this tonight was so excited was so easy but my family did not enjoy it. Maybe I will try it again with some of these modifications

My family does not care for mushrooms so I used a can of beef gravy instead of mushroom soup. Taste like Salisbury Steak!

Yes, my husband taught me how to make the Boy Scout version many years ago, and it is wonderful! The smell permeates the house. and makes the mouth water! The foil is topped with bacon, then cubed steak seasoned as you wish, then a mixture of diced potatoes, onion, carrots, and celery (also seasoned as you wish) are put on top of the meat. Lasty, two strips of bacon are criss-crossed atop everything. Tightly seal the foil and bake for 1 1/2 hrs @ 350 degrees. Yum! We discard the bacon, but it may be eaten, if you wish.

what is chili sauce? am I thinking too complicated? I have no idea. Is it like hotdog chili sauce or a liquid hot chili sauce?? Help please

Hello Rachelle! The chili sauce we're talking about in this recipe is the kind that comes in a bottle and is used for burgers and meats. Heinz and Delmonte are a couple of the brands that make one, and you can usually find them near the ketchup and steak sauces. Enjoy!

I have made potato packets similar to this recipe on the grill and also in the oven this recipe can be made in the oven and yes you can use cut up fresh tomatoes green peppers onions celery anything you like can add worchestshire sauce and a little garlic powder, onion powder even a packet of onion soup mix or a packet of ranch dressing to the mushroom soup before topping cover pan with foil and bake in oven about an hour

This was one my Dad on the grill for us as kids, a favorite and obviously easy. You can make this in so many variations, but I agree with another comment on this, add additional seasonings like a package of onion soup mix to the meat..your choice but very good. Don't heat up the house, fire up the gril and seal the edges tight..no fail

Get real people! As simple as this is, anyone should know how to put it together..DAaa Anyone can make an error. I have never know Mr Food's site make an error before.

This was only "good". The patties lacked flavor. I will make it again but will add spices to the patties to kick it up a notch. I like the comments. They are very helpful...

i really love this one! my dad made it for us all the time when i was a kid! he put carrots and onions instead of the peppers. He called it Hobo Feast

Could you add chucks of tomatoe?

I had a similiar meal in Boy Scouts many years ago but we cooked it in a campfire. Cooking this way is quick and easy. If you don't have a campfire, just use a charcoal grill. Cover packets with charcoal and cook approx. 25 min. or until done. Time will vary with more charcoal.

Made this last weekend and my family loved it. I lightened it up with extra-lean ground beef, 98% Fat free cr. of mushroom soup and used the whole grain version of the crackers. It was still great. Here's a question for the test kitchen though. Would it work just as well if I layered it in a pan and cooked it covered with foil? I want to double the recipe for a crowd and thought I would save time on all the layering and packaging. Thanks for all the help in the kitchen Mr. Food and staff.

I can answer my own ? now. I tried it this weekend. It took much longer to cook in a pan, and the vegetables didn't cook as evenly as in the packets. Stick to the original directions.

This sounds really yummy!! Never thought about using the soup. Like "missevie 7961608" and "Bo b", we just used the meat with carrots and potatoes, something we learned at 4-H Camp. M gonna have to give this one a try!! Thanks for all the great recipes Mr Food!!

Reminds me of the Hobo Dinners the kids and I would do in the backyard and on camping trips...could leave these on the side of the fire while we swam and dinner was ready when we got back ...Love em...We did hamburger or chicken, potatos and carrots, season with salt pepper and garlic if you desire ..Yum...Why did the kids have to grow up and move away...lol

Yes, those wonderful Hobo Dinners from our Girl Scout campfire! And I carried them right into my marriage! My hubby worked long hours, and sometimes his day was not done when expected. It seemed the longer these stayed in the oven (on very low of course), the better they were - especially the onion (cut very thick) which would carmelize. I placed it between the burger, and with the potato cut side down onto the onion, with carrots framing this layer. That was my "basic" recipe, and our fav. Plus, when my son came along, I could pop his out and feed him when he needed to eat, and Dad's would be just perfect when he got to come home! This is a recipe everyone should try whether they do it on a campfire, a grill or in the oven - especially nice in the oven on those cold winters when the warmth and the smell just make everything homey!

Reminds me of a recipe in the Boy Scouts manual for campsite cooking. If you haven't tried the new non-stick foil buy some it is great.

This is a terrific idea, I do this on the grill during the summer but I add french style green beans and don't use the soup. I will try the soup.

Mr. Food (and his co-workers) are human. Humans make mistakes or errors. I am sure they are sorry an incomplete recipe was posted. Mr. Food should be ashamed? Come on, get a life. Most of Mr. Food's recipes are complete, excellent, and easy to make. Keep up the good work Mr. Food!
