This is a regular on dinner tables in the Midwest. How 'bout enjoying the goodness of that down-home cooking?

What You'll Need

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 cup chopped onion (about of a large onion)
  • 1 (16 ounce) can kidney beans, drained
  • 1 (16 ounce) can butter beans, drained
  • 1 (16 ounce) can baked beans
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 (4 ounce) can chopped or diced mild green chilies
  • 1 tablespoon prepared mustard
  • 1 teaspoon beef bouillon
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2/3 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

What to Do

  1. In a large skillet, brown ground beef over medium heat until cooked through, stirring occasionally and crumbling with a fork; drain.
     
  2. Add remaining ingredients and mix thoroughly.
     
  3. Bring to a boil, then immediately reduce heat and simmer 20 to 25 minutes to blend flavors, stirring occasionally.

I'm aware that the term "prepared mustard" distinguishes between the spread-in-a-jar and dry mustard powder. But should I also assume that, in the absence of a term such as "Dijon mustard", that "prepared" means yellow ballpark mustard? Also, is that 1 teaspoon beef bouillon referring to granules, and not the bouillon itself?

Yes, if we do not specify a specialty mustard, it is yellow mustard. The beef bouillon we refer to in this recipe are the granules.
