There's nothing quite like homemade bread, and this Braided Buttermilk Herb Bread is one you'll make again and again. It a has a beautiful braided shape that will impress your friends and family. Dip this classic buttermilk bread in soups or sauces - or just eat it as is!

What You'll Need

  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon plus 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus 1/4 cup flour
  • 2 teaspoons oregano
  • 2 teaspoons basil
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder

What to Do

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  2. Combine warm water, yeast and the teaspoon sugar and let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes.

  3. In a medium saucepan, combine buttermilk, butter and 1/4 cup sugar. Warm over medium-low heat until warm, around 110 degrees.

  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Stir in buttermilk mixture and yeast, mixing until blended. Turn dough onto floured surface, working in final 1/4 cup flour as needed. Knead dough for 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.

  5. Grease a large bowl, place dough in bowl and turn to grease all sides.

  6. Cover and let rise in warm place for an hour, or until doubled. A great place for this is an oven – just warm to 200 degrees, turn off heat and place covered bowl of dough on lowest rack for an hour.

  7. Punch down dough; turn out on lightly floured surface.

  8. Divide into six pieces and form into ropes. Roll two ropes in oregano, two in basil and two in garlic.

  9. Braid one of each herbed rope into a loaf and place on lightly greased baking sheet.

  10. Bake for 25-30 minutes until loaves are golden and sound hollow when lightly tapped.
