Another delicious way to use those apples that'll have everybody coming back for more. (No, you don't have to stand on your head to make it!)

What You'll Need

  • 3 tart apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/4-inch slices
  • 1 cup apple cider or juice plus extra for cake mix
  • 1/3 cup (5-1/2 tablespoons) butter
  • 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 10 to 12 maraschino cherries, cut in half
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 (18.25-ounce) package spice cake mix

What to Do

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  Coat a 9- X 13-inch baking with cooking spray.

  2. In a medium-sized saucepan, simmer sliced apples in 1 cup cider for about 5 minutes, or just until tender. Drain, reserving apple cider. Combine 2 tablespoons reserved, warm cider with butter and brown sugar in prepared baking pan.

  3. Bake 5 minutes; remove from oven and stir mixture. Arrange apple slices and cherry halves in brown sugar mixture. Sprinkle with walnuts; set aside.

  4. Prepare cake mix, substituting apple cider for water that is called for in package directions. Pour batter into pan over sugar-nut mixture.

  5. Bake 55 to 60 minutes. Remove from oven and invert on a serving platter; let stand about 1 minute, then remove pan. (Rearrange apple slices and cherries, if necessary.) Serve warm.

Notes

This is great as is or served with some whipped topping.

Hi, I have not tried this yet but plan too. I was just wandering what type of apples you used? Just went and got a few bushels of Golden Delicious Apples and was wandering if I could use those? Thanks so much for any help you can give and have a Blessed Day. )

Hi there! When the Test Kitchen made this recipe, we used Gala apples, but we believe that Golden Delicious should work just fine. Enjoy!

Try this with a scoop of cinnamon ice cream.

Bake 35-40 minutes tops, or you will burn the cake. Not 55-60 minutes.

The pre-mixed spice cake mix says to bake at most 30 minutes, but this recipes calls for 55-60 minutes?

Hello! For this recipe, you will just need to prepare the cake mix and bake according to the instructions in our recipe.

You are adding a whole BUNCH of ingredients to that cake mix. It will take more time.

Can this be served cool too? It sounds like a good cake to take to a covered dish, but can't serve warm.

MR FOOD -- My husband can no longer eat nuts. Would this recipe be good without nuts? Would I have to substitute something in place of the nuts to keep the right consistency?

omit the nuts or try golden raisins

Sounds amazing! Can't wait to try this on my family.
