Breathing New Life into Pantry Staples

(1 Votes)

The old adage about "rules being made to be broken" really fits when it comes to putting pizzazz back into mealtime. Take our pantry basics like rice, beans, pasta, prepared meal kits, cake mixes, instant potatoes and pudding -- even snacks!

Do something unexpected with any of these:

  • Potato chips: Sure, we can eat them right out of the bag, or with a dip. But crushed, they can be a crunchy, flavorful breading or topping.
  • Prepared meal kits: They're great as is, but add your own personal touches, such as following the basic directions for a cheeseburger-macaroni variety but teaming it with broccoli florets and cream cheese for a main dish packed with fresh garden goodness.
  • Prepared meal kits: Use that same meal kit mentioned above, but add barbecue sauce and serve with crispy tortilla chips for a chuck wagon favorite.
  • Instant pudding mix: Instead of preparing it as is for a basic dessert, add it to your smoothies for extra richness, or thin it out with a little cider vinegar and you'll have a fancy vanilla sauce.

It's all about adding a bit of personal pizzazz to our pantry staples. There are no rules, just endless ways to serve up our own touches of..."OOH IT'S SO GOOD!!"
