Keeping Our Groceries Fresh Longer

If we add up how much money we waste by throwing away spoiled food, the amount might shock us! Here are some money-saving tips to help keep your groceries fresher longer:

  • Home refrigerators should be set to 40 degrees F. or less, and freezers to between 5 degrees F. and 0 degrees F. Refrigerator thermometers are fairly inexpensive, so check your fridge and freezer temperatures regularly to ensure your food is being stored at the proper temperatures.
  • When making your shopping list, group perishable items together and pick those up last. At checkout, make sure cold items are placed next to each other when bagged so they'll stay colder on the trip home.
  • Don't overload your fridge! Air needs to circulate freely to keep foods cool and fresh.
  • Because some produce naturally produces a harmless gas that ripens other items quickly, store fruits and veggies separately.
  • Keep tomatoes at room temperature to ripen and maintain their flavor and texture. Always wash produce just before eating it, rather than before storing, because moisture promotes spoilage.
  • Don't lose a whole loaf of fresh bread to mold if you don't use it fast. Store a few slices in an airtight container and freeze the rest.
