How to Make the Most of Family Dinner Time

Family Dinner Time

There is nothing better than having the whole family sit down for a meal together. And the benefits, besides having a great meal on the table, is that you can actually enjoy some quality time with kids…and they can enjoy it with you. So while you're passing the mashed potatoes and the salad, don’t forget to initiate a conversation that everyone can be part of. Ask your kids how their day was and what their favorite part was. And remember, it’s a two-way street so don’t forget to share the highlights of your day as well.

Did you know that studies have proven that kids who sit down with their families for dinner regularly earn higher grades, are more likely to maintain a healthy weight and are less likely not to smoke or do drugs.

Here are tips to help make meal time more rewarding:

  • The KISS Theory: Remember, it is more important who’s around the table than what is being served on it. So keep what you serve for dinner simple.

  • Hey, I want that: Let everyone get involved in selecting what is for dinner. Also, those who help make it often are more likely to love what they eat.

  • Everyone rolls up their sleeves: Get the family involved with age-appropriate tasks from setting the table on up to preparing dishes.

  • Let time be on your side: Don’t let a time crunch get in the way. How about start a slow cooker meal in the morning, or use leftovers to jump start dinner.

  • Yes, it is possible: Above all, insist that there are no cell phones or TV watching allowed. This is the time to tune in to each other and tune out distractions.
