The smoked sausage in this rich tomato-based sauce will make your taste buds stand up and take notice of our easy-as-can-be gumbo.

What You'll Need

  • 1 pound smoked sausage, cut in half lengthwise, then cut crosswise into 1/2-inch slices
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 can (14-1/2 ounces) stewed tomatoes
  • 1 package (10 ounces) frozen cut okra, thawed and drained
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup uncooked long- or whole-grain rice
  • 1/4 cup dry red wine
  • 1 tablespoon hot pepper sauce

What to Do

  1. In a 6-quart soup pot, combine the sausage, water, tomatoes, okra, thyme, and garlic powder. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low.

  2. Add the remaining ingredients and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the rice is tender, stirring occasionally.

Note

Want to make this even more authentic-tasting? Add a pound of cooked and peeled shrimp 5 minutes before serving.

Thanks for your comment. Don't forget to share!

This was good, but I just had to add a bag of frozen mixed vegetables to it. I like soup, but my son in law doesn't, so I have to pack my soups with lots of stuff and give him some toasted garlic bread to sop up the broth when he's done. Otherwise, I scold him for wasting the delicious broth! I love him anyway. lol (Is there no option to upload photos of the recipes from here I make?)

Hi there BeckySue! We would love it if you would share the photos of our recipes that you make. Please feel free to share them with us on our Facebook page, "Mr. Food Test Kitchen." Thanks!

Quick and easy. Very good. Will definitely make again

I can't believe how good this recipe is!

I think I will use this and add chicken and a can of gravy for chicken gumbo! Thanks!

Can you use something other than dry red wine in this recipe?

Thank you for your question! If you prefer not to use red wine in this recipe, you can substitute it with beef broth. Enjoy and thank you again!

add corn if you dont like okra

I love gumbo, but please tell me I can prepare this recipe WITHOUT the okra. I was forced to eat it when I was a child and I can't stand the smell, taste, texture of it. Does anyone have a substitute for it!! The receipe sounds very tasty, especially adding the shrimp. Freda Brittain

Try zucchini

This is the best Gumbo Recipe I have tried. I always add the Shrimp for the more authentic look and taste. It is really easy to make and yummy too.
