Apple Lasagna

We know! We know! Apple Lasagna sounds strange, doesn't it? Well, we sure will be surprised if this great lasagna recipe doesn't become a favorite snack or dessert with your family.

What You'll Need:
  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 2 (21-ounce) cans apple pie filling
  • 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 6 tablespoons light or dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup quick oats
  • Dash of ground nutmeg
What To Do:
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook noodles to desired doneness; drain and set aside.
     
  2. Coat a 9- x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Layer 4 noodles on bottom of prepared dish. Spread 1 can of apple pie filling on top, slicing any extra-thick apples. Layer 4 noodles over the apples.
     
  3. In a large bowl, mix together the Cheddar cheese, ricotta cheese, egg and granulated sugar; spread them evenly over the noodles and top with the remaining 4 noodles. Spoon remaining can of apple pie filling over noodles.
     
  4. In a small bowl, crumble together the flour, cinnamon, margarine, brown sugar and quick oats. Sprinkle over the apple filling.
     
  5. Bake 45 minutes. Let stand 15 minutes then slice into serving-sized pieces and serve warm or cold.

     
Notes
  • If desired, you can mix together 1 cup (1/2 pint) sour cream and 1/3 cup light or dark brown sugar and serve the lasagna with dollops of this topping for garnish.

I'd like to make this for tonight's supper but I'm sodium restricted. Our small town doesn't carry low fat soups and certainly not sodium restricted soups. What can I substitute for the cream of chicken (or cream of mushroom) soup? I know there are recipes for salt free creamed soups that I make myself. Is that the only answer? The last time I tried that, I was disappointed.

Is it 1 cup of cheddar cheese? Because it says 8 oz. in parenthesis and 8 oz. equals 1 cup, not 2. So does this recipe need 1 cup or 2 cups of cheddar cheese? A bit confusing. lol

Hi there! 8 ounces in dry measure isn't the same as 8 ounces in liquid measure, so one 8 ounce package of cheese equals about 2 cups of shredded cheese. For this recipe you'll need 2 cups. Enjoy!

If you want to use Lasagna Noodles only use the No-Bake kind. They are half the thickness. But I think it would be much better using Phyllo Dough. And more tasty. I'm going to make it with the Phyllo. Which ever you choose is to your liking!

Good taste but be sure to overcook the noodles or they will get dry and tough.

I am contemplating trying this with no-cook lasagna noodles. Tho I have heard that they should be moistened first with water.-- - after seeing a comment how the noodles took away from the taste. --- I was wondering if I should melt some butter, brown sugar and cinnamon and then coat the noodles before placing them in thr dish if that would give it a better flavor? -- Any comment out here.-- -ALSO, HOW ABOUT IT "MR. FOOD TESTING KITCHEN" ??? -(this sounds yummy if done right)

I think that after reading the comments, I'd try it using strips of flour tortillas instead of pasta.

What do you do with the dash f ground nutmeg? It is in the list of ingredients, but never mentioned again.

I would think you would mix the nutmeg in with the ingredients listed in Step 4. That seems the most logical way to use it. :)

i made this for an office Christmas dinner and it was the worst thing ever made, the office was trying to be nice and heart my feelings but i tasted it and it was awful. i would not make this at all

In the instructions the second step said: Spread 1 can of apple pie filling on top, slicing any extra-thick apples. In the ingredients it only calls for apple pie filling so what do you mean when it says slicing any extra-thick apples.

I've opened cans of pie filling that had varied sizes of apples. probably the reason?

The apple filling and the cheese layer was great, but the lasagna really took away from the flavor of the dish. I will try the recipe again only next time I will use some type of pastry instead of lasagna

Maybe try with Ladyfingers or some type of cookie (shortbread)?

try using a puff pastry....
