Can you use tomato or spaghetti sauce in place of whole tomatoes?

Do you cook the pasta first?

No, you do not cook the pasta first. The liquid from the can of tomatoes is more than enough to cook the pasta. This is the beauty of this recipe, it is so easy! Enjoy!
