Everyone has that one favorite food that they'd eat any time of any day. For Mr. Food, it was a tomato sandwich, and he wanted to make sure everyone had the blueprint for the Perfect Tomato Sandwich!

What You'll Need

  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 12 slices country-style white bread
  • 6 romaine lettuce leaves, washed and dried
  • 3 large homegrown-style tomatoes, cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

What to Do

  1. Spread mayonnaise evenly on one side of each slice of bread.

  2. Place lettuce leaves over mayonnaise on 6 slices then place tomato slices over the lettuce.

  3. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste then top with remaining bread. Slice in half and enjoy!

THIS SANDWICH IS VERY DELICIOUS AS IS BUT A NICE, BIG, SLICE OF A WALLA WALLA SWEET OR VIDAL ONION ADDS TO THE WONDERFUL COMBINATION OF FLAVORS OF THE TWO!! YUMMM...

Our Midwest family calls this a "Kitchen Sink Sandwich", as we used tomatoes just picked from the garden. The toms. were still warm from the sun and soooo juicy we had to stand over the sink as we ate, so the juice would drip into the sink! Oh, Yummmmm!

Try toasting the bread first, delish! I even spread a thin layer of pesto on one side of the bread, very tasty!

I make one similar but use mustard instead of mayo. My grandmother always made them that way. YUM!

I like mayo, pimento & cheese, and tomato sandwichs. Robert

I think my Grandmothers Tomatosandwich was the greatest of them all, you toast your bread, put a thick slice of tomato on it, drizzle olive oil on top, sprinkle salt, oregano, and garlic powder over the oil, top off with Hellmans mayo, and your in heaven :)

My parents used to make these with sliced hardboiled eggs, tomatoe, mayo, dutch cheese and lettuce! mmmmmmm MY favorite too!

Try it for a breakfast sandwich with a fried egg. Delicious!

I think some fried bacon would be nice. Leave off the lettuce and tomatoes and this sandwich would be perfect.

That's not a tomato sandwich, that's a bacon sandwich. We're talking "TOMATOES" here.

To harperleith 4697110: Delicious! Try it with a little ranch dressing.

This may sound wierd, but I Love a slice of Swiss cheese on my tomatoe sandwichs.!!

I have been eating this sandwich for years, and may I say I am 83 years old. I agree with you Mr. Food, when it comes to a good sandwich it's "My Favorite Tomato Sandwich".

GB you, Mary.....there is nothing like a tomato!! Being of Italian heritage, the tomato is my favorite vegetable, AND if you have a tomato or two in your house.....you've got a meal!! BTW....I'm 67! The youngsters need to cook the way their parents did!!

I agree--tomato sandwiches are great! Here's my version--give it a try! 2 pcs. bread, any variety--toasted and buttered 1/2 sliced tomato 1 slice onion Creamy, chilled coleslaw, spread on one slice of bread Assemble your sandwich, and enjoy--I'm having one later!

Nothing better than fresh from the garden tomatoes... my fav too,, but I like mine on sourdough bread.

I like sliced cucumber, sliced tomatoe, sliced onion, all sliced thin, mayo, salt, pepper, on your favorite bread. Yum.

Thank you, Mr. Food for the wide varieties of tomato recipes! I've copied most of them and will soon be busy preparing them both for myself as well as Senior Citizens at our Nutrition Center....as soon as each ...fresh... garden vegetable is available from generous citizens who have offered the produce from their gardens in the past and will do so again this year...OOOOsoooooo gooooood!!!!

I love these also have big ole tomatoes growing in my garden along with baby cucumbers but not quite ready yet can hardly wait Bur well worth the wait MMMMMMMMMMMMM GOOD!

I love these ! They are one of my favorite sandwiches ! We always had a big garden with lots of tomatoes , I also love cucumber sandwiches made the same way !

My favorite tomato sandwich is wheat or white bread, mayo spread on one slice then sprinkled with italian seasoning, then thick sliced tomato salted to taste. Sooo delicious!

My cousin got me started on peanut butter and tomato sandwiches....it's great!

OK. Here it goes. Thick slice tomatoe, S&P to taste, whole wheat bread, Mayo AND slice of Swiss cheese!!! Yummy X 2 !!

Mayo on both sides for sure! It's one of my faves for sure!

My favorite sandwich is rustic bread, sliced tomato, sliced sweet onion and lots of fresh basil leaves drizzled with a good quality olive oil. Delicious!!!

That has been my favorite summer sandwich ever since I can remember!

Always loved fresh tomato slices drizzled with olive oil, sprinkled with salt and pepper on THICK slices of ITALIAN bread. The bread soaks up the juices so you don't have to "stand over the sink" while eating it!!

Just read this and went right to kitchen and had a tomato, mayo and whole wheat bread sandwich for breakfast eaten over the sink. Delicious. Would have been better maybe with a slice of sweet onion. Thanks

It is just missing a big slab of Vidalia sweet onion! And mayo on both pieces of bread. Then you eat it over the sink as it is so juicy and yummy!

I like the tomato and lettuce sandwich with a slice of American cheese/ Now, that's yummy!

Fix a grilled cheese sandwich, except add slices of fresh tomato. Sub the ordinary american cheese with provalone or mozarella. Can sprinkle the outer buttered sides with your favorite seasoning (thyme, italian, etc.). This is awesome!!

For a real treat, try Tomato and fresh garden cucumber with Mayonnaise, salt and pepper. As much as I love tomato sandwiches This is just as good if not better. Plain Cucumber sandwiches rank just as high on my list.

My variation is, instead of mayo I use salad dressing and I like to toast my bread. I also leave out the lettuce and add thinly sliced onion...yum :)

I love tomato sandwiches, my sandwich is just tomato with mayo on whole wheat. I think I will try the lettuce with it, sounds much better.
