You'll be slow cookin' up a storm when you make our Pork with Apples & Bacon tonight. This hot and hearty dish has the right amount of sweetness with a touch of saltiness that we know you're gonna love!

What You'll Need:
  • 4 slices bacon
  • 1 (3-pound) pork butt or pork shoulder
  • 2 sweet onions, sliced
  • 2 apples, cored and cut into chunks
  • 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
What To Do:
  1. In a large skillet, cook bacon until crisp; remove and drain on paper towels, reserving 1 tablespoon drippings in skillet. Crumble bacon and set aside. Add pork to hot drippings and cook about 7 minutes, turning occasionally until browned on all sides.

  2. Coat a 5-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. Combine crumbled bacon, onions, apples, brown sugar, salt, and pepper in slow cooker; place pork on top of mixture. Pour broth and vinegar over pork.

  3. Cover and cook on LOW setting 6 to 8 hours, or until pork is tender.

Gave this one a shot, wasn't a favorite... I am going to try again with a different type of apple and a little less chicken broth (I used the whole can instead of measuring and there was way too much excess liquid)... will adjust my rating then.

any suggestions on a good apple to use would be appreciated

Hi there! - We're sorry to hear you had some trouble with your recipe. We definitely recommend trying again with just the 1/2 cup of chicken broth, as listed in the recipe, as this is just the right amount of liquid needed. For the apples, we used gala apples when we made this dish in the Test Kitchen. - Enjoy!

thank you for your quick reply )

So good even my picky kids loved it!

I'm using pork shoulder because it has much more flavor than any cut of pork. Making it for the weekend.

not tried yet

Really delicious used a juice box of apple juice 2 chicken bouillon. cubes 1/2 cup of water 1 t. of caraway seeds did not use the vinegar or chicken broth but may try the vinegar next time Salted & peppered the pork before browning in bacon grease A real keeper old world style

I NEVER HAVE ROASTED RICE. I USE A RICE COOKER. BUT, I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO BROWNING SOME TO SEE IF I LIKE IT. (I BET I WILL) IT PROVES THERE IS MORE THAN ONE WAYTO "SKIN A CAT", AND I LIKE TO IMPROVISE ON SOME RECIPES, AND BE A LITTLE INVENTUROUS, BECAUSE THERE ARE MANY, MANY WAYS TO CHANGE OR ADD TO A RECIPE, AND "HEY!!" YOU MIGHT FIND A BETTER WAY TO DO THINGS THAN WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN DOING. THANKS Y'ALL FOR THE SUGGESTIONS! I'M GOING TO TRY THIS RECIPE THIS WEEK!

I'm sorry but your comment has nothing to do with this recipe!

LOL......I HAVE NO IDEA HOW THAT COMENT GOT ON WITH THIS RECIPE. BECAUSE IT OBVIOUSLY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS RECIPE. YOU ARE CORRECT,...THERE WAS NOTHING SUGGESTING THE USE OF ROASTED RICE. GOOD GRIEF, WHAT A MIX UP. BUT, IT GAVE ME A GOOD LAUGH ANYWAY, REGARDLESS OF HOW IT HAPPENED TO GET ON THIS SITE FOR THIS PARTICULAR RECIPE. HAHA SORRY,....HOPE YOU WERE AMUSED.

It tasted fine, but not great. The meat was pretty bland and the vinegar is really all we tasted as a contrast. I won't be making it again.

I think I would use a Pork Loins, Not a Pork Tenderloin that is a tender cut of meat and plus can be pricey

My family absolutely devoured this! Even the picky eaters couldn't get enough. Thanks, Mr. Food!

Made this receipe and the only thing I would change is to salt and pepper the roast. Otherwise it was very good. The meat was so tender and the sweet & sour of the vinegar and apples gave it a great flavor.
