Buttery Cabbage

Often the best things in life, or on our kitchen table, are the simplest ones, and this Buttery Cabbage recipe falls into that category. Crisp bacon, nutritious cabbage, and a few other ingredients make this simple cabbage recipe a spectacular one, time and time again.

What You'll Need:
  • 1/4 pound bacon
  • 1 head cabbage, coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas
  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
What To Do:
  1. In a large pot over medium-high heat, cook bacon until crisp. Remove from pot; let cool, then crumble and set aside.
  2. Add remaining ingredients to the pot. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook 20 to 25 minutes, or until cabbage is tender, stirring frequently.
  3. Sprinkle with crumbled bacon, toss, and serve.

We call this fried cabbage. leave out the peas, add onion, carrots, small potatoes (boiled) at the end, salt and pepper and you've got a quick dinner.

Then it's not the same thing at all, so why comment?

These recipes I have reviewed look and sound divine. I am gong to try a couple of them and more later on. I am so thankful you have recipes to give ideas to for parties.

I used a can of peas and also diced up a yellow apple for a little sweetness. I really enjoyed it.

I'm just wondering, do you drain the grease after you cook the bacon or are you cooking the cabbage in the grease?

Do not drain the grease. Use the bacon drippings and butter to cook the remainder of the ingredients. Thank you for your question and enjoy!

I make the same recipe, but without the bacon!I saute the cabbage on butter and add onions and cook until tender. When done I add a bag of cooked egg noodles and toss it altogether..add salt and pepper...great dish!

Your recipe is nothing like this bacon, no peas.

That would be fried cabbage with noodles.

The recipe does NOT state DRAIN BACON GREASE, it says ADD other ingredientsto the pot!!!


You keep the bacon grease in the pan. When adding the rest of the ingredients, the grease will help to saute everything. Sounds yummy.

Really like this recipe. We prefer this to sauerkraut. Works well as a side dish with most other foods. Liked "Margaux" hint about cutting bacon into pieces before cooking.

my husband don't like cooked cabbage and he loved it!!!!

i would like to know what to do with the bacon grease- discard or use with butter

since youre not using water, I'd assume you'd use it to cook the cabbage in!

Throw in some cooked egg noodles, sliced keilbossa and this becomes a wonderfully good main dish.

Helpful Hint: Instead of cooking bacon and then crumbling, I found using my kitchen scissors to cut the bacon into small pieces and then cooking it. I tried this once because I don't like getting all that grease on my hands from crumbling after cooking. Works well!

Add onion for a robust flavor. Good for you too.

I omit the butter and use a little green pepper

I first browned a ham steak, removed from pan and added the cabbage and boiled potatoes quartered. Placed chunks of ham steak on top and let it cook covered until cabbage was wilted. Served with toasted breadcrumbs on top. Great dish.

I grew up with cooked cabbage and melted velveeta cheese. It is great!!

I also add a 14oz. can of diced tomatoes. Delish!

I use pepperoni in my cabbage too. it give a good added flavor.

This is so good and adding slices of sausage is what we like instead of bacon. In the summer we take purple cabbage cut in 1/4 wedges and wrap each one with foil, leaving last end open for adding some water, close up and throw on the grill. Top rack while you cook your other foods is required because you could burn it. Just add butter on top each one when you serve it. People will love this. Hope you enjoy!!!

Fried Cabbage is a Southern dish mostly. I was raised PA Dutch style with fried cabbage. Neither style has so much grease in it. If you use the bacon grease only use a couple TBS of it, and NO butter. If you use the butter discard all the bacon grease. A little of either goes a long way. BTW, now I have to go cook some, made me hungry for cabbage fried.
