Fried Cabbage

They'll follow their noses right to the table once they get a whiff of your Fried Cabbage. This tasty, easy cabbage recipe only uses five ingredients (one of them is bacon!), so you can whip up this super side dish in no time!

What You'll Need:
  • 1/4 pound bacon
  • 1 head cabbage, coarsely chopped
  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
What To Do:
  1. In a large pot, cook bacon over medium-high heat until crisp. Remove bacon from pot and crumble; set aside.
     
  2. Add remaining ingredients to pot. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook 30 to 35 minutes, or until cabbage is tender, stirring frequently.
     
  3. Sprinkle with crumbled bacon, toss, and serve.

I increased the bacon used to 1/2 pound. DEE-lish!!

Vey tasty. I used Chinese lettuce and it cooked down too much--only two servings. But good!

I added a can of Tomato with cilantro and bout a cup of water. Delicious!!

We make this dish often. It is a main dish here, so I add more bacon, chopped onion, and a touch of garlic. Paired with some warm homemade bread and fruit for dessert, it is a complete and healthy meal.

I'm going to try this with turkey bacon, I don't know if it will yield enough schmaltz to influence the flavor though. Or you could try some ground turkey but you're getting into the area of the filling for what we call out here on the western plains as "Runzas". I'ts fun to swap, trade or substitute ingrediences in recipes though, its a chance to clean out the pantry or frig, want not waste not!

I cook it with a little water instead of bacon,add some onion and steam away.oh la la

I made for 50 people and they all enjoyed it, there was none left.

I wouldn't use all the grease from the bacon. I think it would make for a greasy mess I'm your mouth. It's really not that good for us, but what a way to go!

Oh my gosh....this is an awesome dish. I also ad a tad of water and some sugar. After I fry up the lardones I save out 5 tablespoons of the grease and ad that to the cabbage and slowly fry away. The whole house smells so good. Love, love love this as a side. My husband loves it but it doesn't like him (or me) at about 2 in the morning.

do you drain the bacn fat or leave it and cook the cabbage in it

I would say to fry the cabbage in the bacon grease...I do. I haven't made this specific recipe but I fix mine like this all the time, except for the butter.

do not drain the bacon grease.. it does not leave a greasy taste in your mouth and it compliments the butter... you get a lot of cabbage from one head so keep stirring. I do not add water as some said only because I do not want to steam the cabbage... I like the fried taste of it. But adding water won't hurt it; it is just another way to cook it

I have been cooking my cabbage this way for years! If you like a little heat, sprinkle with pepper sauce before serving.

I have fried cabbage with onions for years. If I am motivated, I will also add bowtie noodles. But my absolute favorite is to fry drained sauerkraut ( also with onions). This is a small taste of heaven. Any brand of commercial kraut is fine and if you should happen to have some that is home-made, go to the front of the class as this is the best.

Mix cooked cabbage with cooked noodles or bowties. delish!

How do you cover and at the same time stir frequently?

You can remove the cover to stir and cover when you're not stirring.

Slice 1 # of smoked sausage into smaller pieces. fry and remove sausage from pot. Add a couple of tablespoons of oil to pot. Fry one sliced onion until it's translucent. Add one head of coarsley chopped cabbage and fry until cabbage gets some color. Add 1/4 cup of water, put lid on pot and cook until cabbage is tender. Return sliced smoked sausage to pot. Season with salt and pepper to taste and serve. This is the way I have made this for years.

I have made this dish quite often but also saut mushrooms when frying the bacon! Ooh it's sooo good!!!!

Love this, I make it all the time and have for many years although I always add slivers if onion in with the cabbage while it's' sauting.

I add a little vinegar and sugar (or sugar sub), plus I substitute red pepper flakes for the black pepper... have had this in a 5 star restaurants and it is delicious.

just thought that a stick of butter was a half cup, not quarter? as stated in the recipe? which one do you use?

Our apologies. 1/4 cup butter is equal to 1/2 stick of butter. There was a mistake and the "1/2" was accidentally left out of the ingredients. Enjoy!

I make something called bubble & squeek which is fried cabbage & potatoes & why its called that is because when you fry the cabbage, it squeeks & its good. too.

My Mom always added noodle and lots of black pepper to this. She called it krautspaekle, So good! It's a comfort food at my house

I have made this for a very long time. Always with loads of onion, hotsauce but not the bacon. Sound even better with bacon.

Good with Kielbasa sausage as well.

It's not really fried cabbage. It's braised. I don't know why people get so excited about cabbage. It doesn't really have much taste.

Cabbage has a lot of flavor! You're probably not cooking it right. And, yes, bacon grease adds flavor to anything you use it in...cornbread, biscuits. Worth it's weight in gold!

I have made this dish probably 6 times in the past 4 months or so. I use 2 tbs margarine, and half extra virgin olive oil to cook it. I also use turkey bacon and add diced white onion.s and a few drops of hot sauce, half/salt-sea salt and pepper to the recipe. My family absolutely loves it!! It is great as a side dish or a light meal with corn muffin/biscuit/dinner roll. Thank you, Mr. Food!

Delicious......add a can of corned beef or some ground breakfast sausage to the onion and butter...use I can't believe it's not butter...to cut fat ....very tasty

I don't use butter either.. If I don't have bacon will use a little bit of sausage.

I dont add the bacon or bacon drippings, I first melt 1 stick of butter then add a diced onion and the cabbage, cook until the cabbage is tender and the onion are mirrory looking.. then final touch, a lot of pepper and medium salt.. SOOOO good!!!

i boil the cabbage first for about five minutes then strain off water fry your bacon then add cabbage with a dash pepper and paprika fry together for few minutes on high beautifull

Likingit2 I do not use butter for this kind of a recipe. I only use Smart Balance unless a recipe won't turn out with lowfat butter or margarine. Actually I don't do a whole lot of frying, but this cabbage recipe is very good no matter what you decide to add.

Likingit2 This recipe is good using diced ham, if you had some left. Also I added diced carrots to this for added flavor. Very good recipe. Also I have made it with the pre-cooked bacon that you get in a package of 15 slices and it turns out very good if you like cabbage. Tastes good this time of the year.!!

When I had kids at home I made this with carrot, celery, onion, green peppers. When tender crisp, I added Raman noodles, the seasoning packet and just enough water to cook the noodles done, All four of my kids loved this.

This Dish is also great if you add wide egg noodles and all season salts

I add one sliced onion and 1lb of polish sausage to this with a pinch of cayenne for kick. Makes a meal.

I add grated carrots and diced green peppers. It's a family favorite!

My family has always loved fried cabbage with Kluski noodles........tastes just like Huluska try it by cooking a bag of Kluski noodles aldente and adding it to this recipe.....yummy.

My paternal grandfather was a cook in the Army during WWI. He always made this, along with homemade biscuits and boiled potato. He always added about 1/8 tsp of baking soda when he made it! I really miss cooking with him!!!!!!!

Keith, your post warmed my heart. Our four children were always helping in the kitchen. They are all excellent cooks. Now, their children are helping & learning. What a blessing to have that precious time with our Grand's! Absolutely love Fried Cabbage, having it tomorrow for lunch with fried chicken, stewed potatoes, black-eyed peas and Mexican Cornbread. Because cabbage can upset the stomach, I add a pinch of baking soda to recipes that call for cabbage and similar vegetables. It eliminates 'gas' problems.

I have made something similar to this adding onions and/or peppers.I have never used bacon, but I have used polish sausage,or cut up pork chop or pork steak. Added chinese 5 spice and soy sauce for a kind of "twice cooked pork" dish.

Love this dish. I always toss a thinly sliced onion in with the cabbage when I make this.

I vary this recipe a little by adding some apple cider vinegar mixed with honey or sugar to make it sweet and sour. I add this at the end after the cabbage is cooked in the sauteed bacon or turkey bacon.

Add a can of petite diced tomatoes and a sprinkle of cumin and you have a tradition Mexican dish. Great flavor!

Always used to add cooked noodles to our fried cabbage. Old Hungarian dish.

Absolutely the best Fried Cabbage I've ever made and my guests loved it. Can be made a day in advance. Cook to just barely caramelize (which happens at the end of cooking time) but keep a close eye it doesn't burn. I've sprinkled the crisp bacon day before and also just before serving. Both work very well.

Bubble and Squeak? Saute the cabbage, add some peeled and quartered potatoes. Add a 1/2 cup of water and saute with lid for about 30 minutes or until potatoes are done. Don't worry about calories. Saute with bacon, ham, onions anything else you want, Mr Food says, It's So Good!

Cabbage is great , its' a green and fiber and a great filler in most any kind of soup.

I add a lb of cooked noodles before I remove the cooked cabbage. Stir the noodles into the cabbage until it is well mixed let it all cook foe another 5 min to start to brown the noodles a bit. Sooo good.

I fry cabbage,onion and potato in olive oil and add little smokies makes a great one pot meal!!!!!

I made this recipe a week ago and my husband and I enjoyed it. I added a touch of sesame oil to it, not enough to take away flavor. We really enjoyed it. Very inexpensive to make, and quick and easy.

You don't have to eat the whole recipe, moderation is the key, and if you follow that rule, you can eat almost anything and not gain weight

My grandmother died 26 years ago at 97. She owned a restaurant and did all the cooking. She cooked the above except she kept the bacon and bacon grease in the pot and added 1/2 c. water then put the cabbage in the same pot to simmer till done. She never worried about lard or grease. My daughter and I make this for every pot luck! Everyone loves it! YUMMY!

I like everyone's comments, so many ways to tweak this recipe! Mine is: cook the cabbage in butter and add Real Bacon Bits (I use Hormel brand) at the end. Already 50% less fat than pan-fried bacon.

I have made this and add ginger, seseme oil, some soy and tereaki sauce... use to fill egg roll wraps and fry lightly..... or just use the cabbage combo over rice.... it is so good!!

My grandmother taught me to make this. I slice the cabbage in coarse shreds, it will cook quicker, and add a large sliced onion. Never used butter though. I pour off most all of the bacon grease, leaving the crusty bits, and use a non-stick pan. My grandmother cooked everything in bacon grease, I love the flavor but don't care for the greasiness. Love the idea of adding noodles!

I notice that many recipes, such as this one, ask that you cook bacon until crisp, and then crumble it. Why not just chop the bacon in the beginning, and cook the chopped bacon until crisp, doing away with what to me is a messy crumbling step? Any difference? Bacon chops easily if it's lightly frozen first.

I always chop my bacon before frying, it is much easier. Hint, you can chop it much easier if it is slightly frozen

I wish you would list the sugar, calorie, fat and, especially, carb content, as I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic.

It sounds very tasty, but for my health, I think I would cook the bacon in the microwave in paper towels and fry the cabbage in a little olive oil. I often cook cabbage this way, with chopped carrots, onion, and potato, but I've never added bacon to it.

I grew up on fried cabbabge and love it. I make it by boiling cabbage, ham and potatoes together. The next day I cook bacon and add the leftover potatos and cabbage together, It is a filling meal and a great comfort food as well.

I make a cabbage dish a couple of times a week!! It is an inexpensive vegetable, and for those of who are watching our weight, you can eat tons of this! I don't always have bacon, but....when I do, I save the grease, and use a couple tbls. for this recipe! I eliminate the butter, (you don't really need it)! It is oustanding!! Add onion, too!

My best friend gave me this recipe years ago. i use margarine, onions and cabbage. It is so good that I could eat the whole panfull if I wanted.

When I was a kid (50- odd years ago) my grandmother would go out and get a huge cabbage from her garden, and make this... I watched how she did it. the only difference was no butter, and she did add like 1 Tbsp. of vinegar. I really miss her and her fantastic cooking, and everything but meat was from her garden!

I have always used the bacon grease to fry the cabbage, I also add one med onion, sliced thinly, and a clove of minced garlic. I also make this dish and add some cooked wide noodles. My Pennsylvania Dutch relatives taught me this dish both ways. I too add a little vinegar to the plain fried cabbage sometimes. Enjoy. You don't need the butter!

I love fried cabbage and have eaten it for years. This becomes an Hungarian dish when you add noodles. Thus fried cabbage and noodles. Never used bacon, but this sounds good! Who doesn't like bacon?? I just love Mr.Food. Watch him daily and print his recipes to use. Many thanks!

Love fried cabbage and noodles! I usually add a few onions too. Great even without the bacon for everyone but especially for those who don't eat meat. Vegans could use a non-butter spread or oil.

re: fried cabbage..it was never disclosed if the bacon grease should be replaced with the butter...or could you use the bacon grease instead of butter..the taste would be better and just as healthy...butter-vs-grease...thank you :)

We used to use bacon and use the grease too, but no more...just drain off the bacon grease and use olive oil.....the bacon still gives it a good flavor....don't need all that grease clogging up the arteries.......

Sorry, I don't agree with Mona Lisa - don't "never" throw out the bacon fat. Unless you just have an overwhelming amount of it in the pot, the flavor (an the shine in your hair) is not gonna clog your arteries -unles you are drinking it by the pitcher - get real folks.

I make this a lot. I drizzle white vinegar over it really gives it a flavor boost u can add it on plate to taste or to the pan. I leave out the butter.

My grandmother and my mother, never used butter just bacon grease. Also, onion, garlic cooked in the bacon fat. No water or anykind of liquid. We always put vineagar and hot pepper sauce on the table to sprinkle on the cabbage. There were never left overs.

I always add a can of rotel to this....just enough kick and my family loves it! Yummmm!

After frying the bacon, I use the cabbage, onion and a can of green beans. Top with the bacon and enjoy. My kids and grandkids love this.

Try using oil to cook cabbage & onion together. Add cooked hamburger, put on buns.

I have made this dish for several years! Love it. Try it with a dab of sour cream at serving. Was a favorite at County Fairs! Usually just referred to as "Cabbage & Noodles".
