Get ready to reach for the tastiest homemade onion rings ever! Our Sweet 'n' Hot Onion Rings are made from mild, sweet onions that are fried in a zesty batter that's sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

What You'll Need

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground red pepper
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 cups club soda
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 2 large sweet yellow onions, cut into 3/8-inch-thick slices and separated into rings

What to Do

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, sugar, baking powder, ground red pepper, and salt. Whisk club soda into mixture.

  2. In a large soup pot, heat 2 inches of oil over medium heat until hot but not smoking. Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing the excess to drip back into the bowl. Fry a few onion rings at a time for 5 to 6 minutes, or until golden, turning once during cooking. Drain on a paper towel-lined platter before serving.

THE BEST EVER!!!

What kind of sauce would you recommend for dipping?

Is there a gadget to slice the onions evenly? If so,where can I buy one and are they expensive? Thanks :)

get a mandolin slicer, perfect slices with ease.

Pam--if you are the same PamMerryman in Kingman that we used to babysit for and then you sat for my kids, ask to borrow Mom's slicer. If you're not the same one, sorry.

i found a knife with guide on it it works great

I am just guess dmschmid but i would think like cayenne pepper! Maybe red pepper flakes, i would venture to say whatever you and your family can tolerate. I am just using a dash of cayenne for us! Enjoy :-)

I'm confused by what is meant by "red pepper..." Is that chili powder, paprika, ground red pepper flakes, or something else? I'd appreciate it if someone would help me out, because I'd like to try these! Thanks!

I always considered red pepper as cayenne. If your using cayenne, a pinch is more than enough, a tablespoon will knock your socks off!!!!!

My honey and I made these onion rings tonight. They are fantastic!!! Easy to make and great flavor. Will serve them again and again. Thanks Mr. Food!!

I'm hoping that this recipe will work with Walla Walla Sweets since they are in abundance here in Oregon. I always knew there was something I was missing in an onion ring recipe: The club soda. Thank you for posting this recipe.
