Hotel Hijinks: St. Patty’s Slow Cookin’

As you may know, part of my job as Chief Food Officer is to visit TV stations all around the country and share our recipes with all of you at home.

As you may not know, most TV stations don’t exactly have real working cooking facilities for us to use. Now, that doesn’t mean that what you see on TV hasn’t really been cooked by our team! It just means we sometimes have to find creative, albeit somewhat unusual, ways to cook up our recipes…

This past weekend I traveled to Chicago for two reasons:

To attend the 2014 International Home and Housewares Show where we kicked off our new line of bakeware, which will be available in stores starting this fall. (How exciting is that?!)

And, to share our St. Patty’s Reuben Sliders on WCIU’s “You & Me This Morning” segment.

With the show being such a success (you guys really like us!) I was really excited to show-off our easy-to-make, mouthwatering sliders. I was also ready to have to make these anywhere.

Yes, that’s right, among the luggage and aprons, my team had packed…

I set it up on the counter inside my hotel room and put the corned beef brisket and pickling spices to simmer before heading off to sleep. (It’s safe to say I had some pretty tasty dreams that night!)

Next thing I know, I’m getting a phone call from Amy, one of our team members. The call went a little like this:

“Howard? Are you awake?”

“I think so.”

“Good. I think we have a problem.”

“What’s wrong?”

“Well, it’s not really a problem…it’s just that I can smell the corned beef all the way into my room at the other end of the floor. I stepped out into the hallway and you can smell it there too.”

[ Immediately, I realize that the room is filled with the savory aroma of pickled corned beef. ]

With eyes half open I answer:

“That’s not a problem at all! After all, who doesn’t love corned beef? Especially on St. Patty’s Day!”

As we were packing up our things to head over to the station we witnessed some of the guests peeking their sleepy heads out of doorways. It looked like they were trying to figure out where the tasty smell was coming from!

I sorta felt bad, but after thinking about it, I was on a “No Smoking” floor, not a “No Cooking” floor.

It’s a good thing they didn’t have one of these!

 

I bet you that room service ended up with lots of breakfast orders for Corned Beef Hash that morning!

I guess you could say that we brought the smells and cravings of the St. Patrick’s Day holiday to the Renaissance Chicago Hotel.

    I love your recipes, I make lots of them in my own kitchen.
    I have no problem with anything on your site, I don’t think you should change anything. The “Complainers” can go somewhere else or should keep they’re commonents to them selves.
    Keep doing, what your doing, giving us new recipes! :)
