Fort Lauderdale (December 17, 2008) — Packing on the pounds during the holiday season is not only a concern for the sake of one’s appearance, it is a health issue. That’s why TV host Mr. Food, a.k.a. Art Ginsburg, made it a point to share moderation tips with his viewers in today’s segment.
Mr. Food’s tips include eating a good breakfast in order to avoid overeating later on. He recommends tasting tempting items in small portions, so as not to feel totally deprived, and selecting fresh fruit over sweets whenever possible. “Think 'moderation' and choose a smaller plate if your eyes are craving larger portions. Forget the 'all or nothing' mindset; now’s not the time to start a diet,” he advises.
Experts like Dr. Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, a researcher at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, agree. “Heavy consumption of fatty foods can also lead to changes that cause blood to clot more easily. As a result, heart attack risk appears to surge.” Dr. Lopez-Jimenez led one study of 2,000 people that showed a fourfold increase in heart attack risk in the two hours after eating a big meal. “Someone who eats three times the normal calories of a regular meal will have an extra workload for the stomach and intestines and therefore the heart,” Dr. Lopez-Jimenez says.
