Tomatoes 101

Can you believe that the average American eats 18 pounds of tomatoes each year? It’s my favorite food, so my average is even higher! Here are 10 terrific tomato recipes and a few tips to help you enjoy this year’s crop.

Is it a fruit or a vegetable?

The tomato is a fruit of the vine, and no matter where we find them – at our markets, farm
stands or in our own backyards, we’ll be
the “top tomatoes” in our kitchens when
we serve up these winning tomato combos!

Here are a few tips to ensure great–tasting tomatoes anytime:

  – No matter the variety, choose plump tomatoes      that are free of cracks, bruises and blemishes.

  – Do not buy tomatoes that are stored in a
     cold area.

  – When you get your tomatoes home, NEVER      refrigerate them! (They’ll lose their incredible      flavor and firmness.) It’s recommended that we      store fresh ripe tomatoes stem–side down in a      cool, dark place, and use within a few days.

  – To test for ripeness, check the firmness.
The tomato should yield slightly to pressure.

  – Serve tomatoes at room temperature for      maximum taste enjoyment!
