Shopping Secrets
“When it comes to food, sure we all want to eat healthy, but it also needs to be convenient. With a little know-how and a few tips, you’ll be surprised how easy it can be.”
|
|
| If you’ve ever gone grocery shopping after work when your stomach was growling, or your grocery cart has a lot more junk food in it than what’s on your shopping list, you’ll appreciate these secret tips. |
 |
Fuel up
Make your grocery list and do your grocery shopping on a full stomach so you won’t be tempted to buy sweets and snack foods. Shopping on an empty stomach encourages impulse purchases which you usually regret once you get home. |
 |
Go online
If you usually go into the grocery store planning to buy just one item but come out with several, try shopping from some of the online grocers. You can submit your order and either have it delivered or drive by and pick it up; that way, you won’t buy what you don’t need. |
 |
Out of sight,
out of mind
As you unpack your groceries, reduce temptation by storing food in your pantry or in cabinets; don’t leave it out on the counter where you are more likely to pick at it. |
 |
Read labels
Compare the Nutrition Facts labels on convenience items for maximum calorie savings. When reading the labels make sure you compare nutritional information against serving size so that you are comparing apples to apples.

Save time
at the salad bar
Your supermarket’s salad bar is a fantastic place to load up on pre-cut fruits and vegetables. Having these on hand at home, and for taking to work, makes it easier for you to nibble on fresh, healthy snacks. |
 |
Try something new
The next time you shop, pick up one new fruit or vegetable. You shouldn’t have to invest much for just one small purchase, and this will help you slowly incorporate new foods into your diet. |
 |
Shop the Outside Aisles First
You may not realize it, but most grocery stores are organized in basically the same way. Usually, you’ll find the most nutritious foods located along the outside aisles of the store: fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, fish and poultry, and dairy products. |
 |
Beware of
Sales Traps
Stores often place sale items such as high-fat snack foods and sugary soft drinks at the ends of aisles. Pass ‘em right by on your way to the healthy stuff! |
 |
Don’t Succumb
to a Sweet Tooth
If you’re tempted by rows of cookies, candies and ice cream, avoid those aisles altogether. If salty snacks are your weakness, steer clear of the chip aisle, or at least buy a single-serving snack food package instead of a family-sized bag. |
 |
Avoid the
Checkout Trap
Grocery stores always stock candy and other snack items along the checkout aisles. If you’re usually tempted by these sweets, choose a candy-free aisle, or flip through a magazine while waiting in line. |
