No, not with paint, but with creativity; even if you don’t think you’re the creative type, it’s easy. Nobody wants to dig into a meal that looks blah. So dig through your pantry, your fruit and veggie bin, and have a ball!
Here are a few tips that cost practically nothing,
but really deliver: |
Give your recipes a new life by adding in colorful ingredients when you’re cooking. A little bit of color goes a long way when mixed into our mealtime favorites to give them some real eye appeal.
Also, don’t forget to garnish your serving platters and dinner plates by adding a blast of color with simple garnishes. Here’s a list of ingredients that can put the finishing touch on your mealtime masterpieces. This is just to get you started – experiment for yourself and I’m sure you’ll come up with even more: |
| |
Fresh herbs: Whether it’s basil, parsley or cilantro, chop it in the food processor or by hand and sprinkle on foods for a fresh look and taste. It’s even easier to put a few sprigs on or around your food. (It’s a natural breath freshener, too!)
Bell Peppers: With green, red, yellow, orange, and purple ones widely available now, they’re an easy way to add color to your foods. Just chop them and add to foods, or cut them into rings to place around finished dishes. |
Scallions (green onions): A few whole, cleaned scallions on the side of a platter say “garden fresh.” And why not chop them on an angle and use them for topping stir-fry and other dishes, giving them an Asian flair? |
Tomatoes: Talk about simple! Brighten up your serving platters or individual plates by placing a few whole or halved grape or cherry tomatoes around them. Whole ruby red tomatoes can be sliced, wedged or hollowed out to really add a splash of color. |
Greens: Highlight your food by lining a platter with any type of flat greens, from endive and escarole to leaf, romaine or iceberg lettuce. For example, serve your pasta salad on a bed of romaine, or your Italian tomato salad in an iceberg leaf. It sort of makes a serving “cup” for salads. |
Fruit: The options are endless! Why not start by adding a slice, wedge, or half of a lemon, lime, orange, strawberry or grapefruit for flavor and color? And it couldn’t be easier than to add a bunch of red grapes to your cheese board. |
Chocolate: Drizzle your desserts with some melted chocolate (white or dark) or one of the new plate decorating toppings they sell at the market. |
