Edible containers

It’s pretty easy to hollow out or use any of our everyday favorite foods and use them as edible bowls or platters. Not only do they add color and excitement, you get to eat the bowl rather than wash it.

Veggies: Cut the top off a whole tomato, scoop out the pulp and seeds and fill it with cooked rice, couscous or vegetables. Cherry tomatoes are even great filled with a store-bought cheese spread. Pie pumpkins and acorn squash are perfect for serving hot or chilled soups. A hollowed-out bell pepper makes the ideal holder for dip on our veggie platters.
Fruits: Cut and shape a watermelon like a basket (with or without a handle), and fill it with cut fresh fruit. It’s even easier to split a cantaloupe in half, remove the seeds, and fill it with chicken or tuna salad
Breads: Whether it’s rye, sourdough or pumpernickel, a whole unsliced loaf (1 or 2 pounds) makes a great-tasting edible bowl for our dips. Not only can you dip away, but when the dip is done, you get to enjoy the bread soaked with the filling. Maybe hollow out rolls and fill them with chili or cream soups…mmm.
Make an Edible Bowl: Bake flour tortillas to create edible bowls that are great for salads. For large ones, line an ovenproof bowl with a 10“ tortilla shell so it fits like a lining. Bake at 300°F. until crisp.

For cookie bowls, turn your muffin tins upside-down, spray with nonstick cooking spray and mold sugar cookie dough over it. As it bakes, it will create a cup that’s ready to fill.
