If you’ve ever tried to measure out sticky ingredients like peanut butter, honey, or shortening, you’ve probably left half of it in the cup or on the measuring spoon because it just wouldn’t come out, which ultimately means you’re not adding the full amount you intended to your recipe. Besides wasting your ingredients, you probably became pretty frustrated, so here are some tips to help.

Spray some nonstick cooking spray into your measuring cup (or measuring spoons) before putting in any gooey ingredients. It’ll make the items slide out much easier. |
If you don’t have any nonstick cooking spray then measure your oil or shortening first (if your recipe calls for it) before your sticky items. That’ll make them slide out just as easily. |
Pick up an inexpensive measuring cup that is designed just for this. After measuring out your ingredients, you simply push the plunger part of the cup, and out come your ingredients as easy as 1, 2, 3. |
Line a dry measuring cup with plastic wrap and fill with the sticky item. Remove the ingredient along with the plastic wrap. |
Fill a 2-cup measuring cup with cold water to the 1-cup mark. If the recipe calls for 1/2 cup shortening, simply spoon the shortening into the water until the water line raises to 1-1/2 cups. Pour off the water and just like that you’ll have measured 1/2 cup shortening. |
When measuring smaller amounts of honey (a teaspoon or tablespoon) try using a honey dipper. It allows you to easily control and measure the amount you need without the sticky mess. One dip equals approximately 1 tablespoon. |
