Accidental choking can happen when we’re eating – anywhere, at any time, while we’re alone or with someone. According to statistics, almost 4,000 people, two-thirds of which are children, die from choking each year.
Some easy ways to prevent choking:
- Not talking with our mouths full. It's not only polite, but it's safer to finish chewing and swallowing before we start speaking.
- Make sure to cut food into bite-sized pieces – especially for children! Also avoid giving very young children small foods and hard foods like nuts, popcorn, grapes, raw carrots and the like.
- Don't bite off more than you can comfortably chew at one time.
- Be familiar with the Heimlich Maneuver, since accidents do happen. Take a course near your home and, while you’re at it, it's good to learn CPR too, 'cause you never know whose life you may need to save!
Prevention and preparation are the best ways to ensure our day will always turn out to be...
