How To Extinguish A Kitchen Fire
How can we prepare to prevent or handle a kitchen fire? Mr. Food gets help from the fire department with tips on how to handle a fire extinguisher when things get too hot in your kitchen.
How To Extinguish A Kitchen Fire
  • Turn off the burner, if possible and safe.
  • Fires spread quickly, and the first line of defense is our telephone. Dial 911 for the fire department and get everyone out of the house.
  • If the fire is in the oven, keep the door closed. If it's in a pot or skillet, do not try to move the pan.
  • If you have a grease fire, DO NOT try to extinguish it with WATER.
  • The easiest way to smother a grease fire is to cover it with a pan lid. Be careful with glass lids; they can break from the extreme heat of open flames.
  • Grease fires can also be smothered with baking soda, but it takes a lot of baking soda to do the trick. Unless the baking soda is easily accessible, it's usually best to quickly find a lid.
  • If you want to attempt to extinguish a fire with a fire extinguisher, and you are confident that the fire is small enough to safely contain with a fire extinguisher, fire prevention experts say to remember PASS:
P = Pull the safety pin at the top of the extinguisher
A=Aim the nozzle, horn or hose at the base of the flames
S= Squeeze the handle of the extinguisher
S= Sweep the nozzle from side to side until the fire goes out
