There's nothing quite like homemade bread, and this Braided Buttermilk Herb Bread is one you'll make again and again. It a has a beautiful braided shape that will impress your friends and family. Dip this classic buttermilk bread in soups or sauces - or just eat it as is!
What You'll Need
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1 pkg. active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon plus 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 6 tablespoon butter
- 2 teaspoon salt
- 4 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, plus 1/4 cup flour
- 2 teaspoon oregano
- 2 teaspoon basil
- 2 teaspoon garlic powder
What to Do
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Combine warm water, yeast and the teaspoon sugar and let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes.
- In a medium saucepan, combine buttermilk, butter and 1/4 cup sugar. Warm over medium-low heat until warm, around 110 degrees.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Stir in buttermilk mixture and yeast, mixing until blended. Turn dough onto floured surface, working in final 1/4 cup flour as needed. Knead dough for 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Grease a large bowl, place dough in bowl and turn to grease all sides.
- Cover and let rise in warm place for an hour, or until doubled. A great place for this is an oven – just warm to 200 degrees, turn off heat and place covered bowl of dough on lowest rack for an hour.
- Punch down dough; turn out on lightly floured surface.
- Divide into six pieces and form into ropes. Roll two ropes in oregano, two in basil and two in garlic.
- Braid one of each herbed rope into a loaf and place on lightly greased baking sheet.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until loaves are golden and sound hollow when lightly tapped.
