COOK TIME

Pushcart Onion Sauce is an easy version of the traditional hot dog topping that's served up at New York City hot dog stands. Take your taste buds to the Big Apple with the very first bite!

What You'll Need:
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 medium-sized onions, cut in half then into 1/4-inch slices
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 pinch Pinch of ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon chili powder
  • Dash of hot pepper sauce
  • 1 dash of salt
  • 1 cup water
What To Do:
  1. In a medium skillet, heat oil over medium heat; add onions and saute until golden and limp, about 7 minutes.

  2. Stir in ketchup then add cinnamon, chili powder, hot pepper sauce, and salt. Stir in water and bring mixture to a boil.

  3. Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for about 10 minutes, or until mixture is heated through.
Note
  • This is really great spooned over cooked hot dogs, but try it with other foods, too, and watch how fast they disappear!

I was unsure about this recipe first saw it, the cinnamon paired with the onions seemed a little strange to me. It turned out really good though, and I will surely be making this simple condiment recipe again soon. It is so versatile and easy to make. In addition to hot dogs and burgers, this would be great on top of a sub sandwich, a sloppy joe, or even on top of a nice salad.

This is very tasty stuff! A big spoonful on top of a hamburger is delicious too! Very easy to make and we usually have the ingredients on hand.

This sauce is amazing! My husband describe a sauce he eats downtown Milwaukee on called a Brooklyn Brown. According to him this sauce is dead on a perfect copycat!! Yeah for me and Mr. Food :)

Born and raised in Chicago we never put ketchup on our hot dogs (small children had ketchup on hot dogs ) Ketchup was used on french fries often ... In chicago it is always mustard picaliily and chopped onions sometimes a nice hot pepper(sport pepper) on top But this sauce is interesting and will try it!

Love this sauce and so simple, Thankyou Mr Food.

My mom made the pushcart onion sauce and I am now making my own batch it really is "ooh it's so good!" It is awesome on brats too.

! Well A NY Coney Island Dog it's NOT ! -- or is that a lost art ?

A SNAP TO FIX AND TASTES GREAT.

Great recipe - but use more chili powder, more cinnamon, more hot sauce, more ketchup, and less water. Otherwise it's too thin. Add water at the end if you need to stretch it out. I'm a native New Yorker living in Chicago and this recipe really reminds me of NYC!

Thanks for the tip! I can't wait to make this onion sauce. Memorial Day is coming up so I need something like this for grilled brauts and burgers. I would never have thought to put those spices together but then I don't have to because this site does it for me. LOL

This recipe is GREAT -- friends made it to go on top of brats at a motorcycle rally and it was gobbled up, here in KS!

Sounds fabulicious!
