Move over, boring side dishes! Our Dutch Red Cabbage is an old favorite that we know you're gonna love.
What You'll Need
- 1 red cabbage, shredded (about 2-3/4 pounds)
- 2 Granny Smith apples, peeled and chopped
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/4 cup dry red wine
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 cup coarsely chopped cooked bacon
What to Do
-
In a large soup pot over medium heat, combine all ingredients; bring to a boil. Cover and reduce heat to low.
-
Simmer 30 minutes, or until cabbage is tender, stirring occasionally.
Notes
-
Red wine vinegar can be substituted for wine. Just add an additional 1/4 cup sugar.
- This is a great go-along with almost any main dish, but we served it up with our Dining Car Steak -- yummy!

This is delicious!! Also good to brown pork tenderloin medallions, remove from of pan and add this cabbage recipe to the same pan. As it starts to cook nest the pork tenderloin medallions in the cabbage and finish cooking. This makes a great gravy and can be served with delicious sweet or regular mashed potatoes. YUMMMMM. Guess what we're having for dinner!!!

I've used apple juice for wine, and Howard suggested red wine vinegar with added sugar, which i am going to do next time I make this recipe. First time out I put Polish sausage with it

I love cabbage - this sounds really tasty. Wonder what the calories, carbs, etc. add up to in one cup? Any idea? Thanks

I am going to give it a try even though I am not a cabbage fan. Who knows...maybe my "tiny little tastebuds" have changed! :)
