I was just diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes one month ago…no surprise as my maternal Grandmother, Mom and Dad all had the disease. Unfortunately, not a one of those loved ones took care of themselves. For instance, Mom passed at age 69, and since I’m now 67 I’d really make use of such a wonderful gift as the magazine subscription. I’ve got my fingers crossed.

Imagine my surprise when my sister (lives in Maine) mailed me (I live in Oklahoma) a copy of the December, 2014 issue of ‘Diabetes Forecast’ and… right there on the cover was a picture of my sister. She had recently received the ‘Joslin Victory Award’ for having survived for 75 years with juvenile diabetes and… there was an entire article on the event, with more pictures of my sister inside. After much searching, I was able to find more copies of this issue at a Barnes & Noble bookstore here in Tulsa and purchased them. After all, it is not every day that one discovers that they have a celebrity in the family. ;<) If I am so blessed, and am chosen to receive a 1-year Free subscription to this magazine, I would be so pleased if it could be sent to my sister. Thank you for the lovely pictures and article… even if I don't win.

Watch what you eat. Treat your body like a temple; only offer good pure foods and lots of water. Be positive, and do for others happily.

Both my oldest brother and youngest brother have been diagnosed with diabetes. Neither of them knows how to handle this disease especially when it comes to what they can or cannot eat. This is new to all of us but I would like to help them by preparing a few meals that are as close to what they’re use to eating but more nutritious for their bodies and be able to give them pointers for other problems they may endure with being diabetics. This subscription could be the first step to a longer life for my bothers. Please help me to help them!

      Hey Lenora!

Thanks for sharing a little bit of your story, and we’d love to hear more!
Our purpose for asking people for their stories is so that we may share them on our site. We are hoping to get several stories that we can put up on our website for people to read, comment, and discuss. We think this could be very helpful to many people and we hope to build a community where people share stories, swap ideas, and enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

Your share can be about anything! Remember, you don’t have to have diabetes to be affected by it. Your words could help!

My favorite healthy living tip is to enjoy eating while staying within your diabetic bounds. When I want something sweet I reach for a sweet apple or a handful of raisins.

Did not know there was a low sodium cornflake. Would probably leave out the celery and add more pepper or finely chopped onion .

My one piece of advise would be just to get up and MOVE! If you an’t possible fit in the 10,000 recommended steps per day then try parking a little farther way at the store, or take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk your dog, etc. There are plenty of ways to incorporate added activity! But most importantly, don’t be a couch potato, they begin to rot after a while, lol!
