“I am not a glutton. I am an explorer of food.” – Erma Bombeck
Hello! My name is Merly and I’m one of the editors here at Mr.Food Test Kitchen. My passion for life basically revolves around two things: words and food. It sounds a little strange, but they truly are the two things that are guaranteed to bring a smile to my face. I love everything having to do with reading, writing, eating, and cooking, which means that the Mr. Food Test Kitchen is basically the perfect place for me.
As my quote suggests, I am an avid food “adventurer.” I’m the girl who follows every local restaurant in the city on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, you name it. Okay, okay, I also follow restaurants outside the city…I mean, you never know when you’ll need to drop in to a good restaurant while traveling! And I’m always on the lookout for great new places and foods to try!
Favorite Mr. Food recipe: It’s hard to choose just one, but we’ll go with the Mexican Cornbread Salad for now.
How often do I cook? I try to cook at least 3 times a week.
Who am I cooking for? Mostly for myself, but occasionally I’ll share with friends and family.
How long have I been cooking? Growing up, I would always help dad in the kitchen, but I’ve been making solo meals since college.
My biggest challenge in the kitchen: Time. I haven’t quite mastered the art of prepping things in an efficient manner.
What profession best describes me in the kitchen? An artist. I’m definitely the one that takes extra care to ensure that every plate looks photo-worthy, even if I’m only cooking for myself.
The kitchen appliance I couldn’t live without: My pink KitchenAid stand mixer! I love to bake, and this baby makes the process so much easier! It also looks really cute on my counter.
My ultimate meal: My ultimate meal would probably be some kind of giant buffet featuring a bunch of unrelated foods, which would include, but would not be limited to: Mexican, hamburgers, sandwiches, sweet potatoes, and a wide assortment of desserts of the pumpkin, vanilla, and mint varieties.
The one food I can’t stand: Papaya and grapefruit. It’s just not gonna’ happen.
The food that instantly takes me back to childhood is: Cuban-style arroz con pollo (Chicken with yellow rice).
If I were a spice, I would be: Cayenne pepper.
My favorite food that grows from the earth is: Beans, peas, and carrots.
If I could have dinner with anyone in the world, dead or alive, it would be: I’m not sure, but probably someone quiet and voracious.
Sweet tooth, or salt-craver? What’s my weakness? Both! And I’d beg to differ to have it considered a weakness…
