National Sandwich Month: The Best Sandwich Recipes

August 28, 2014 by Merly 1 Comment

When I was first interviewed here at the Mr. Food Test Kitchen, one of the questions I was asked was, “What is your favorite food?” Now, if you love food as much as I do, this is a tough question. I wanted to say “EVERYTHING!”, but I didn’t want to look like a total gluttonous nut, so I answered, “Sandwiches.” Looking back, I’m glad this was my answer because I really do think that sandwiches are fantastic. In fact, I think that by saying sandwiches I covered “everything,” because what CAN’T you make into a sandwich?

Since August is National Sandwich Month, and because it’s also back-to-school season, I figured I’d share some great sandwich recipes I found on MrFood.com. I’m pretty sure there’s a sandwich out there for everyone, and I’d like to make it my job to make as many of you into sandwich lovers as possible!

Before we get started, I think it’s important that we take a moment to recognize the “creator” of the sandwich, John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. As the story goes, the Earl requested his cook to prepare him a dish that he could eat without interrupting his gambling game. The cook brought him sliced meat between two pieces of bread, and VOILA! … the birth of the sandwich. You can read more about it here!

Over the years, we’ve taken the basic idea of a sandwich and transformed it into a pretty amazing thing. Nowadays, you can basically have a sandwich for every meal! Some classic sandwiches are even kind of famous, like the Monte Cristo, BLT, Philly Cheese Steak, and Peanut Butter and Jelly.People love sandwiches so much, they even write songs about them!

Thinking about serving up sandwiches for breakfast? Good idea! Sandwiches aren’t just portable, they’re easy to make, too! Our cheesy, buttery Breakfast Croissant Melt and PB & J Waffle Sandwiches are both ready for eating in just 5 minutes! Of course, if you’re really pressed for time there are some great ready-to-heat-and-eat options available in the freezer case that taste great, too!

You can find these sandwiches in the freezer case! Don’t they look good?!

I have to admit, I’m not really good about preparing lunch for work. I’m often in a hurry, and forget all about what I’m going to eat. A sandwich has come to my rescue many times. I like all kinds of sandwiches, but lately…I’m really into deli salad sandwiches (and tossing in dried cranberries)! Take a look at some of the ones that I think look EXTRA-AMAZING from our site:

Still not tired of sandwiches? Great! ‘Cause here are a couple of sandwich-inspired casseroles that I’m pretty sure your whole family will thank you for. (I welcome dinner invitations).

Now, I know some of you may stay away from sandwiches because you’re trying to eat a healthier diet. Good news is, there’s still a sandwich for you! Here are some healthier options you may want to check out:

Healthier Sandwiches

Greek Fish Pitas | Chicken and Broccoli Hand Pies | Veggie-Stuffed Pitas

I don’t know about you guys, but I really want a sandwich right now. I think I’ll run to the grocery store, and see what inspiration awaits for me in the refrigerated and frozen aisles!

Now, it’s your turn to share with me! What is your favorite sandwich?

I completely agree that I’m never sick of sandwiches. I’m trying to eat more sandwiches. They can be cheaper when you eat out. Do you have any other tips about looking for good sandwiches?
