When I was first interviewed here at the Mr. Food Test Kitchen, one of the questions I was asked was, “What is your favorite food?” Now, if you love food as much as I do, this is a tough question. I wanted to say “EVERYTHING!”, but I didn’t want to look like a total gluttonous nut, so I answered, “Sandwiches.” Looking back, I’m glad this was my answer because I really do think that sandwiches are fantastic. In fact, I think that by saying sandwiches I covered “everything,” because what CAN’T you make into a sandwich?
Since August is National Sandwich Month, and because it’s also back-to-school season, I figured I’d share some great sandwich recipes I found on MrFood.com. I’m pretty sure there’s a sandwich out there for everyone, and I’d like to make it my job to make as many of you into sandwich lovers as possible!
Before we get started, I think it’s important that we take a moment to recognize the “creator” of the sandwich, John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. As the story goes, the Earl requested his cook to prepare him a dish that he could eat without interrupting his gambling game. The cook brought him sliced meat between two pieces of bread, and VOILA! … the birth of the sandwich. You can read more about it here!
Over the years, we’ve taken the basic idea of a sandwich and transformed it into a pretty amazing thing. Nowadays, you can basically have a sandwich for every meal! Some classic sandwiches are even kind of famous, like the Monte Cristo, BLT, Philly Cheese Steak, and Peanut Butter and Jelly.People love sandwiches so much, they even write songs about them!
