Some people like 'em sweet, but we like 'em savory! Our simple bread recipe for Sausage and Cheddar Muffins has the makings for a hearty supplement to our favorite homemade soup. Using some of our favorite winter ingredients like onion, cheese, and pork sausage, this biscuit baking mix recipe is a real winner.

What You'll Need

  • 3 tablespoon butter
  • 1 medium-sized sweet onion, finely chopped
  • 1 1/2 cup biscuit baking mix
  • 2 cup (8 ounces) shredded Cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 pound hot or mild ground pork sausage, cooked and crumbled

What to Do

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Melt butter in a skillet over medium-high heat; add onion, and sauté 3 to 5 minutes or until tender; set aside.

  2. Combine biscuit mix and 1 cup cheese in a large bowl; make a well in center of mixture.

  3. Stir together milk and egg, blending well; add to cheese mixture, stirring just until moistened. Stir in onion and sausage. Spoon into lightly greased muffin pans, filling two-thirds full. Sprinkle with remaining 1 cup cheese.

  4. Bake 18 minutes or until golden. Let stand 2 to 3 minutes before removing from pans.
