You'll love our version of this popular German dessert! Our Black Forest "Quickie" calls for some of our favorite shortcuts, including devil's food cake mix, cherry pie filling, and vanilla pudding mix. The great thing is, that even though we start with shortcuts, we end up with a homemade-tasting cake that's really impressive!

What You'll Need

  • 1 (15.25-ounce) package devil's food cake mix
  • 1 (21-ounce) can cherry pie filling
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 (4-serving size) package instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 (1.55-ounce) chocolate candy bar, shaved
  • 1 (8-ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • 15 fresh black cherries, with stems

What to Do

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9- x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.

  2. In a large bowl, combine cake mix, pie filling, eggs and water; mix well. Pour batter evenly into baking dish.

  3. Bake 35 to 38 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool.

  4. In a medium bowl, combine pudding mix with sour cream and milk and mix until smooth. Spread pudding mixture evenly on cake. Sprinkle with chocolate shavings and a dollop of whipped cream. Garnish with cherries and serve or refrigerate until ready to serve.
