It has been said that Lady Bird Johnson was responsible for making this dessert recipe popular. Black & White Texas Sheet Cake is big and full of flavor just like the former first lady's homestate of Texas.

What You'll Need

  • 2 stick butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • FROSTING:
  • 1 stick butter
  • 6 tablespoon milk
  • 4 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 3 1/2 to 3-3/4 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

What to Do

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Coat a 10- x 15-inch rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray.
  2. In a large saucepan over medium heat, bring the 2 sticks butter and water to a boil. Remove from heat; stir in flour, granulated sugar, eggs, sour cream, salt, baking powder, vanilla, and baking soda until smooth. Pour into prepared pan.
  3. Bake 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.
  4. To make the frosting, in a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter with milk and cocoa powder. Remove from heat and stir in 3-1/2 cups confectioners' sugar and vanilla; mix well, (adding more confectioners' sugar, if necessary, until spreadable) then frost cake.
