Doggie Bone Treats

COOK TIME
40 Min

Do ya think your furry friend feels left out when you cook for everyone else but him? Why not make a batch of these Doggie Bone Treats? It's just one way to show some TLC.

What You'll Need

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole-wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup wheat germ
  • 1/2 cup powdered milk
  • 3 tablespoon vegetable shortening
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon green food color
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh mint, optional

What to Do

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degree F.  Coat a rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray.

  2. In a large bowl, combine both flours, the wheat germ, powdered milk, shortening, brown sugar, and salt; mix until crumbly.

  3. In a small bowl, combine the water and food color; mix well. Add to the flour mixture, along with the egg and mint; mix well.

  4. On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough until smooth. Using a rolling pin, roll to a 1/2-inch thickness. Using a wreath- or dog bone-shaped cookie cutter or a knife, cut out biscuits.

  5. Place the biscuits on the rimmed baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until browned around the edges. Remove to a wire rack to cool completely.

  6. Makes about 1 dozen treats.

Notes

Before making these, make sure you're aware of any possible allergies your dog may have to wheat, eggs, or dairy products.
