Drink in the compliments when you use buttermilk, yes, buttermilk to make a homemade Buttermilk Coleslaw that'll rival any deli-style version from the market. Try it and become a believer!

What You'll Need

  • 2 (10-ounce) packages finely shredded cabbage
  • 1 carrot, peeled and shredded
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon white vinegar

What to Do

  1. Combine cabbage and carrot in a large bowl.

  2. Whisk together sugar and remaining 7 ingredients until blended; toss with vegetables. Cover and chill at least 2 hours.


Notes

  • This makes a big batch of coleslaw, and leftovers will keep a couple of days in the fridge. If you don't' need such a large amount, you can easily cut the recipe in half.

Cut the sugar down and shred your own cabbage much better. Bagged salads and coleslaw mixes are not fresh in the bags much cleaner fresher brighter taste when you make your own not to mention much healthier

Way too much sugar. I added additional vinegar, lemon juice and mayo to counteract the sweetness. I didn't really taste the zest of the buttermilk--probably would not use regular milk and add additional buttermilk.

I made it for my wifes birthday cook out and made a half head of cabbage it was gone in 10 min. everybody wanted the recipe. Thanks

I made this and it was really good. But, I added a little chopped sweet onion to it as well - it was GREAT!

would it last to double or triple recipe & store in fridge?
