There's something irresistibly comforting about the taste of an old-fashioned cake that's chock-full of melt-in-your-mouth streusel in every bite. Our Amish Streusel Cake recipe starts with the shortcut of a cake mix.

What You'll Need

  • 1 cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 stick butter, softened
  • 1 (18.25-ounce) box yellow cake mix, prepared according to package directions

What to Do

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9- x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.

  2. In a medium bowl, combine graham cracker crumbs, brown sugar, walnuts, cinnamon, and butter; mix well and set aside.

  3. In a large bowl, prepare cake mix. Pour half the batter into baking dish and sprinkle with half the crumb mixture. Repeat  with remaining batter and crumb mixture.

  4. Bake 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool, cut into squares, and serve.

I have to disagree with the name you're using for this cake. Amish Streusel Cake should be all from scratch. A boxed mix is not from scratch. So this should be called Generic Streusel Cake. ( I'm disappointed.

Although I have yet to make this, I have made a streusel (coffee) cake using Bisquick instead of cake mix, and it also works the same way. It is a little crumbly using Bisquick, though. So, I'll try this with the cake mix instead, and maybe try adding in chocolate chips like one of the comments did below. Some people are allergic to nuts, so be careful when making these recipes with nuts.

Even better the next day .

I love you so much and I use to make recipes as I can I love sweet toooooo much so thank you for every recipe I am from Jordan - Amman thanks again .......

What could I use if I do not add the cup of nuts? Any ideas would be great ! Thank you !

How about raisins or craisins?

I make this with a couple handfuls of semi-sweet choc chips in both layers of streusel...a family favorite!

I shop at Amish stores all the time and they DO sell cake mixes!! Boxed cake mixes!! Not everything Amish comes from scratch and MOST people know this!! :)

I made this last night for my church's LiveOut group and everyone LOVED it! Very yummy, and I only used half a cup of pecans because that's all I had and it was plenty nutty enough, I thought.

Why do so many of these "Amish" recipes contain a pre-made mix? My mom made this every week ago when I was a child, she was not Amish and did not use a "mix". I find it frustrating to look up recipes that use some type of pre-made ingredient.

Amish use cake mixes all the time. Sometimes they make up big batches and store and just add the wet ingredients. They even sell the mixes at Mennonite stores.

I went to an Amish bakery expecting WONDERFUL STUFF! I bought a pumpkin roll and when I got home, I found it to be horrible....the cake itself was nothing made from scratch and the filling was artificial "creme". I threw it, and a cherry pie, in the trash. Talk about disappointed. I guess, like the rest of us, it depends on the person doing the baking!

To the lady that has sugar problems you can sub. the regular sugar with the spendlar brown

I made this cake to take to a friends house this weekend and everyone went nuts! My son and husband loved it as well and it was so easy. This recipe is definitely a keeper.

I hope you find our Amish Streusel Cake like the one you used to eat in PA! Please let us know what you think. Mr. Food has plenty of diabetic-friendly recipes you might want to try: http://www.mrfood.com/?task=search&search_term=diabetic+

Mr. Food I used to watch you on TV. Being from PA the Amish Streusel is something I love now I have the recipe so I can make it myself. Not to often I am a diabetic, have to do in moderation. :)

You can use Splenda Blend. Less sugar. Or use the baking kind of Splenda.
