Plantation Fruit Salad

CHILL TIME

It's no wonder this was a popular snack on the plantations of the deep South. Even before we had refrigeration, everyone enjoyed the cool refreshing taste of fresh fruit! And today, we still love these same flavors...with a few little extras thrown in!

What You'll Need

  • 4 large Red Delicious apples, cored and cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 4 oranges, peeled and sectioned
  • 4 bananas, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 pears, cored and cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/2 cup coarsely chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup maraschino cherries, quartered
  • 1 cup mayonnaise

What to Do

  1. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients except mayonnaise.

  2. Add mayonnaise and gently mix to coat fruit pieces. Cover and chill for at least 2 hours before serving.

I believe my Mother made this or very close and called it a Waldorf Salad. Also, I do not believe it is supposed to be sweet as in dessert, but refreshing. That's why the mayo & not cool whip or pudding. Just a thought and a memory, :-) .

Agree. Looks like a Waldorf salad, except ma put grapes in hers didn't have the cherry on top

yummy!!

think this might be better using a cool whip with 1 package of sugar free pudding (prefer lemon when working with fruit) then again the is a matter of individual taste

would that be more like a dessert using using all canned fruits, no fresh, except 2 bananas, i use 1/2cup coconut, pineapple tidbits, peaches & pears diced maraschino cherries lemon pudding(instant) 12 oz cool whip, drain all fruit except peaches. i chill over night.
