How to Melt Chocolate

How to Melt Chocolate

Have you ever walked by a gourmet candy store or bakery and seen the beautiful displays of chocolate-dipped strawberries, pretzels, cookies, and more? Ever wondered how they get the chocolate to melt so perfectly for dipping? Well, wonder no more, 'cause we're here to show you just how easy it is to melt chocolate for all of your baking and dessert needs! It's really simple to do, and you don't need any fancy tools or equipment to do it. Soon, you'll be making your own homemade candy and dipped fruit right out of your very own kitchen! The next question you'll be asking is, "What should I cover in chocolate first?"

How to Melt Chocolate (3 Different Methods)

  1. Double Boiler - Don't have a double boiler? Just fill a saucepan with hot water and find a metal or glass bowl that fits securely on top! Bring your water to a simmer, and place chocolate in the bowl. Stir your chocolate as it melts; then, make these Chocolate Sandwich Cookie Truffles!
  2. Microwave - In a microwave-safe bowl, melt 1 oz. of chocolate in 60-second intervals on 50% power, removing to stir and turn (if your microwave does not have a turntable), until chocolate is evenly melted. All microwaves are different, so be sure to adjust intervals, as needed! You can use this method to make our Chocolate-Covered Strawberries!
  3. Cream/Milk - You can also melt chocolate with a little cream or milk (2 oz. chocolate: 1 Tbsp cream/milk). This gives it a smoother consistency and makes it easier to melt. Try it out in our chocolate candy recipes for Chocolate Cherry Truffles and Fudge Balls!

Test Kitchen Tips & Tricks:

  • Always make sure that the chocolate pieces you are melting are all about the same size. If you're using chocolate chips, you don't have to worry, but if you're using a chocolate bar be sure to break it up into uniform pieces so that your chocolate melts evenly!
  • A drop of water can clump your chocolate, so make sure everything is completely dry and keep it away from any water.
  • Stir, stir, stir! Use a rubber spatula and stir until everything is nice and melted.
  • You don't want to overheat your chocolate, so always melt it low and slow.
