Remember those delectable fried funnel cakes you used to get at the fair? Well, now you can make these Pennsylvania Dutch treats at home with our recipe for Easy Funnel Cakes.

What You'll Need

  • 2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Oil for frying
  • Confectioners' sugar for sprinkling

What to Do

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt; mix well.

  2. In a medium bowl, beat eggs, milk, and vanilla until well blended. Add to flour mixture and beat until smooth.

  3. In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, heat 1-inch of oil until hot.

  4. Holding a finger over bottom of a funnel with a 5/8-inch opening, pour 1/2 cup of batter into funnel. Drizzle batter into hot oil, swirling it in circles from center outward. Fry until golden, turning once. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with confectioners' sugar. Repeat until all batter is used. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use the batter right away, or it will thicken too much to pass easily through the funnel! If it does get too thick, you can add a little milk to thin it out.

A great recipe, but if you look at the ingredients, a-p flour, baking soda, salt, baking powder, you can just substitute self rising. A quicker shortcut to make great funnel cakes is to just use your favorite pancake mix and make sure it will slowly drain through a funnel.

These are my sister's favorite fair food. I'll have to pass along this easy recipe!

This would be fun to try. My kids always get these at the amusement parks. Would be a great once a year treat. It does not look hard.

Video would not play smoothly

My goodness, if I make funnel cakes at home anytime I want, I'll weigh a thousand pounds in no time! Love them, but I think it's safer to only have them when the fair is in town.

Love the fact that I can make this at home and don't have to go to a fair to get it. Not to mention, it's so much cheaper making them at home! These funnel cakes melted in my mouth!

Loved this recipe! It was so easy to make and just like we get at our state fair.

great recipe - tastes just like the ones you get at the fair

These cup cakes sound great. Can you cook them in a regular oven. at what temperature. Marcia.

Can these funnel cakes be made with self-rising flour?

Hi Christine! Yes, you can make these funnel cakes with self-rising flour. Enjoy!

Can I use pancake mix for the funnel cake?

Good question! We are testing this out in the Test Kitchen and will let you know what the results are. :)

Hi there! We just tested this recipe using pancake mix and it works just fine. :) Enjoy!

thanks i needed a funnel cake recipe

Is there a way to save and reheat the funnel cakes so I don't eat them all in one sitting?

Hello! Funnel cakes are best eaten immediately after they've been fried, but if you have some left over, you can try reheating it in the toaster oven to crisp it up a bit.

going to make this now ! looks easy and fun :D

My husband and I make funnel cakes in our concession trailer. Your oil needs to be at 375 degrees. We also add 1/2 cup of either cherry or apple pie filling to the top over the powdered sugar for an extra kick.

What type of oil is recommended for making these?

Vegetable or canola oil will work best.

Funnel cakes are ok but I really like elephant ears with sugar and cinnamon on. do you have a recipe for them?

I love funnel cake at the Missouri State Fair- I almost go every year! So when I saw this recipe on Mr. Food, I knew I just had to make it! Great recipe and so fun to make!

I love funnel cake. I have actually gone to fairs mainly to eat funnel cake. Two are the limit now. When I was in my younger years I could eat six funnel cakes in one day. So much for the younger days. They talk about the golden years but when one is in their teens to forties, that was the golden years. "OOh they were so good".

Just saw the recipe can't wait to make. Does look easy if so my grandchildren will love it.

Can't wait to make my second batch great!!!!!

oh so good 10

I've been making these for over 30 years, using an authentic Pa Dutch recipe. I use an electric skillet and a candy funnel to dispence the dough. Works like a charm.

Whats your Pa Dutch recipe?

I made these yesterday but it just wasn't the same! They weren't sweet enough for me and they were skinny not fluffy like they are at the fair. I believe it was because I used a squeeze bottle that wasn't wide enough. It was fun making them with the kids though!

So much better and cheaper to do these yourself. MMmmmm Mmmm!

Wow, was just thinking about how good a funnel cake would be and went out and bought a funnel on my lunch break. Got on computer to find a good recipe and this was the first recipe I saw. Easy and yummy.

These are very tasty and easy to make. The suggestion from *redhotmomma* is a good one that I also use. Less mess and more control. :-)

Try putting batter in a squeeze bottle

Love the funnel cakes!

These are a 10 out of 10!

yummmm
