Our Minnesota Hot Dish is a meat and potato lovers dream! This hot dish recipe with hamburger also has potato tots on top and veggies inside. Talk about hearty! The best part? This comforting hot dish recipe bakes up in under 40 minutes, which makes it the perfect busy weeknight dinner. (And, in case you were wondering, a hot dish is just like a casserole -- they just say "hot dish" instead of "casserole" over in Minnesota.)

What You'll Need

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 (10-3/4-ounce) can cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 (16-ounce) package frozen mixed vegetables
  • 1 cup (4-ounces) shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 (32-ounce) package frozen seasoned potato nuggets

What to Do

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Coat a 2-1/2-quart baking dish with cooking spray.

  2. In a skillet over medium heat, brown ground beef, onion, and salt, stirring until meat crumbles and is no longer pink; drain. Spoon ground beef into prepared baking dish.

  3. In a small bowl combine soup and milk, mix well. Layer frozen vegetables, soup mixture, and cheese over ground beef. Top with frozen potatoes.

  4. Bake 35 to 40 minutes, or until potatoes are golden and casserole is heated through.

Do you cook the veggies and tater tots first? Or, just assemble the casserole with them frozen?

I'm making this tonight using leftover meatloaf instead of ground beef! Can't wait to eat.

What can you use to replace soup in these recipes, most soups contain MSG which is a big no no in our household.

Hi there! The Test Kitchen hasn't made this recipe with a soup substitute; however, if you wanted to substitute something for the soup, we suggest beef gravy. If you are using the beef gravy as a substitute, we recommend that you also omit the milk. Hope this was helpful!

I have made this many times but I like green beans instead of mixed veggies and no cheese. It is so easy to make and keeps well on those night when you have to keep supper warm without drying out. Delicious!

This is delicious. Adding cheese is something new for me and makes this even better.

looks delishous

Think would be even better using taco seasoning mix on the ground beef prior to baking

I need to use smaller dish next time or more soup. I do not like mushrooms, and I still enjoyed this. My wife says I am comin around.

I used cream of chicken and it was very good

I have made Tater Tot Hot Dish many times! People tweak little things differently in their own recipe- our family doesn't always put shredded cheese on it. It is so easy and quick to make.

Very tasty! My whole family loved it...something that doesn't happen often..LOL. Will make it again. It's a keeper.

Hi. I have made this & we love it. We make this dish once a month. Yummm!

http://youtu.be/-WOOlX6-FOE That's the link to the video I made of making this. This was so tasty! Everyone loved it. Highly recommend! Thanks. I've posted a link to this page in the description of my video as well as show this site in the video.

I tried 2 variations to this recipe. 1) Cheddar cheese soup instead of cream of mushroom.2) Cream of Celery soup instead of mushroom.

This was great!! My family liked it so much that I had to make it twice in one week and double the recipe!! The recipe by itself wasn't enough!! LOL

This is indeed a favorite in Minnesota! We call it tater tot hot dish. We call the food hot dish and the dish it is baked in, a casserole.

This is also great made with cooked chicken (I use deli roasted chicken) and cream of chicken soup. Otherwise follow same directions.

I made this last week. My husband loved it. I used Cream of Chicken soup, frozen peas and corn(which I had on hand). I also used potato crowns. Plan to make it again this week!

I have made this before but we call it Tator Tot casserole. I use various frozen vegetable to make it different each time I make it. I also will use French Fried Onions sprinkled on top. We have to have the cheese since we are from Wisconsin. Not too many dishes are made without cheese! This is a family favorite that gets asked for often.

very good and best of all my husband liked it so much he took it for lunch the nex day. ps I did add the Worcestershire. Thanks for the tip

I have made a hot dish like this many times, I put in 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce, spices it up nicely.

sounds very good. Thanks for recipe.Plan to try soon.

I make the mixture put that in the pan then I put sliced velveta cheese over that and then the tator tots, and I spray some pam over the top of the tots and there nice and crunchy.

I liked it and thought it was tasty. After reading the comments on being bland I mixed cream of celery and cream of mushroom, baked for 1hr, and I used ground Turkey seasoned with garlic, onion, Tiger Seasoning because I like the lighter taste of the meat. I'd fix again for more appreciative people.. my picky children were not impressed with the appearance.

An easy recipe and delicious!

Grew up with this recipe. It fed a family of 5 pretty cheap in those days! I still make it for my hubby and I. I usually bake it for 1 hour just to make sure it's hot and we like the tater tots crispy. Yum!!

In Northern MN this is known as jailhouse casserole for obvious reasons. Instead of the mixed vegetables we use either the same amount of corn or cut green beans...and, as a previous poster indicated, 30 minutes is not long enough to cook this. At least 45 minutes, better an hour...or you'll be able to use your Tater Tots for a jailbreak.

Casserole is good, but I had to put it in the Microwave after it baked for 30 minutes. The frozen vegetables weren't even warm and the meat was cold and some cheese was not melted. I suggest either leaving it in the oven longer or turning up the heat.

In Wisconsin we call this Tater Tot Casserole and always bake it for an hour. I like to put onion rings on top of the "potato nuggets".

YEs tater tot casserole is what we call this in Wisconsin I have no idea where Minnesota thinks they have invented it LOL I add extra beef and 1 or 2 beef cubes and some garlic powder less vegetables and I softer the frozen vegges in microwave before adding many time I use a handful off corn and a handful of green beans of course lots of shredded cheese on top !

loved the recipe. I seasoned the hamburger with taco seasoning. also used feista nacho soup. kids loved it

Great idea, have this soup and did not know what to do with it...YEA, going try tonight Love this site for ideas

This sounds good. I'm from Minnesota..

Is there any way to make this casserole in a slow cooker? I need to get it to a potluck that is at a distance and no oven available at site.

Have made similar casserole for years, with more spices to jazz it up for a Cajun or Italian flair. Description says ready in under 30 min but then cooking time says 45 min. I'm not great at math, but....

WHATEVER!

Can you use hashbrowns instead of tater tots?

I doubt it. Tater tots are meant to be crispy and brown on top, and they are designed to do that in the over, hash browns aren't.

I make this and sometimes I use the square hash brown patty in the frozen food section. I also like the fact that each square is a serving. They are great to use in this.

I tried this with sweet potato tots was really good for a change, & only used greenbeans.

My mothr-in-law used to make this alot and she called it Tater Tot Casserole. It is delicious and I still make it ince in a while!

This is one of our quick go to meals in our house which we all call, tater tot casserole. I got the recipe from my husband and his family who are from WI.

I love seeing this recipe on here. I'm from MN and we call it tatertot hotdish in my family. Whatever you call it, it is a delicious comfort food that pleases everyone. I make mine with ground turkey as I don't eat red meat and it is equally as tasty, give it a try, you're sure to love it!

Sounds very good to me. I've made something like this but not with vegetables which would give more good things to it.

Hahaha, this is a staple in MN. We call it "totdish" at my house.

Made this today for dinner and my husband said it's a keeper. Call it whatever you want, it was good.
