Ready to shake up your tired old meat loaf? Applesauce and chili sauce give plain ground beef a tangy flavor that's sure to be the change you're looking for.

What You'll Need

  • 1 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 3/4 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped, or 1-1/2 teaspoons instant minced onion
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons chili sauce

What to Do

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  2. In a large bowl, thoroughly combine all ingredients except chili sauce. Place mixture in a greased 9- x 5-inch loaf pan.

  3. Bake 30 minutes; remove meat loaf from oven and spread chili sauce over top. Return it to oven and bake 30 more minutes, or until no pink remains and juices run clear. Serve hot or cold.

Note

This makes great meatballs, too! Just shape the raw mixture into balls and simmer in your favorite tomato sauce or meat gravy until thoroughly cooked. Serve with pasta, rice or potatoes.

For the breadcrumbs I crush seasoned salad croutons, I always get complements.

This was good, but I have another recipe using meat and sausage that we prefer over this one.

i made this and also put chunks of apples in it was soo good

I haven't tried this 'version' yet, but a note on breadcrumbs . . . I take all my leftover bread, in particular the crusts, grind them up, and store in the freezer in zip-lock bags. That way I always have crumbs on hand.

I do the same with left over bread :)

how about using lean ground pork loin?

I have been making this recipe for over 20 years and it is always a hit. Sometimes I uset he chunky applesauce. Yummy

This is now our favorite meatloaf recipe. Quick and easy to put together.

This is our favorite meatloaf recipe!

The best meatloaf I have ever made, I made a substitution though, I used oatmeal instead of bread crumbs and tried to make my own chili sauce. The meat was so juicy and delicious, other then being a little heavy on the chili powder in the sauce, this recipe is awesome!
