When I saw the picture, I thought, wow, what a great idea! I love giardiniera and roast beef but never thought to put them together on a sandwich bun! I'm not Italian, that's my excuse! lol There are some great suggestions here, and I'm going to try making my own Italian seasoned roast beef in a crock pot!

In my very Italian home town, this recipe would make great, flavorful roast beef hoagies -- but not Italian beefs. Home of an Italian festival for the past 50 years, we use an old, old recipe which puts Italian spice seasoning and pepperoncin directly into the simmered sliced beef. Served on Italian bread or hoagies, we dress out with mozzerela and a couple of pepperoncini on the side. In town that still has pure Italian blood and 2nd-3rd generation names ending in -ini and -etto, I don't think we're doing it wrong.

I was born and raised in Chicago and I can tell you that a Chicago Beef does not have cheese on it. A Chicago Beef and hot or sweet peppers or both. A Philly Cheesesteak has cheese on it. This is a great idea for cutting a lot of the work and preparation. Just needs more spices ie Italian seasoning rosemary and garlic. I also use some worchestershire.

Mr. Food, I went a head and added your recipe to our website, Mr. Food Italian Beef Sandwich Recipe on ItalianBeef.com! Thanks and keep up the good work!! You ever make any ChicagoStyleHotdog's?

Mr. Food, first off, GREAT job!!! Glad to see that you have put together a nice (quick) recipe for Italian Beef. You should make a note though that a true Italian Beef is not roast beef, it is prepared completely different with many different spices that are typically used on roast beef. If you'd like to see a few versions of how some of the major Chicago players you can check out our website http://www.ItalianBeef.com Thanks again for the recipe and helping get the good ol beef word out! My family lived in Chicago in the s and a street vendor gave my mother a recipe that I still use today I've tweaked the procedure a little to use a crock pot I cook my roast beef with Italian seasoning and a lot of rosemary most important in a crock pot overnight The next morning I put the crock in the fridge to harden the fat When chilled I scoop off the fat and slice the meat I reheat the meat in the microwave Then I saute onions and green peppers on the stove until tender crisp To assemble the sandwich I spread open the hoagie bun flat on a plate layer the sliced beef onions green peppers onto the bun add a couple of slices of provelone cheese on top and put the sandwich under the broiler until cheese is melted lightly browned Close the bun and serve OrRead More you can assemble the sandwich wrap in foil and keep warm in the oven until serving time

Hi Bonnie. Could you share the recipe? My spouse lived in Chicago for many years and since moving to the West Coast there is nothing here that comes close to what he had in Chicago.

Bonnie we would love to have your recipe up on our website ItalianBeef.com/Recipes There are famous recipes as well as family, fan submitted etc..

I saut sliced onions and mushrooms until tender to taste. Add either swiss or mozzarella to the open roll and toast lightly, then add broth, beef, onions, mushrooms and more broth. Works for me..
