That jar of applesauce that's sitting in your pantry has more than one use. Our Spiced Applesauce Cookies use this special ingredient to sweeten up traditional cookies in a non-traditional way.

What You'll Need

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar, plus 1/4 cup for sprinkling
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup unsweetened chunky applesauce

What to Do

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat baking sheets with cooking spray.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, cloves, and cinnamon; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl with an electric mixer, cream shortening and 1 cup sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg. Add dry mixture gradually, alternating with applesauce. Mix until well combined. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto prepared baking sheets and sprinkle with remaining sugar.
  4. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or until nicely browned. Remove from pan to cool.
