"Everything" Onions

(2 Votes)
YIELDS
1 1/3 cups
COOK TIME
20 Min

Give your hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, fish or eggs that little something extra with delicious onions. The great thing about these onions is that you can truly add 'em to 'everything'!

What You'll Need

  • 3 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon corn starch
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

What to Do

  1. Melt butter or margarine in a large skillet. When it begins to turn brown, add sugar and mix well. Add onions and simmer (cook on low flame) for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add beef broth.
  2. In a small bowl combine corn starch, Worcestershire sauce and salt. Stir into onion mixture and cook until slightly thickened.
  3. Serve with steak, hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, fish or add to omlets -- whatever!

This is one of those recipes I could never get tired of...I love onion on everything so the name is very appropriate. I'm just wondering though is this like an onion jam...or more like caramelized onions? And, is this supposed to be stored in the refrigerator (assuming there's any left) and if so, for how long. Maybe it's ok to assume the sugar helps preserve it a little longer...right?

Hi there! This is probably more like onion jam because it's slightly thickened in a sauce. Also, it will last a week in the refrigerator! Enjoy! :)

Would have been nice of you to tell what type of onion you used. I used sweet onions and it was very good. Next time, I will try red or yellow.

This recipe will work with yellow, white, red or sweet onions. It will not work with immature onions, known as green onions, spring onions, or scallions. If it is mature and more or less round in shape it will work in this recipe. When it comes to red, white yellow onions, they are pretty much interchangable. Each variety has it's partisans, but use what you have.
