Onion Recipes, Tips, Tricks, and How-To's

We've collected all of our pages on onions and created this collection which will teach you everything from the different types of onions and their best uses, to picking the perfect onion for your recipe.  We've also included tips on how to cut onions and how to store them.  The best part?  The recipes at the end!  We've included a delicious French Onion Soup recipe that we are sure you'll love, among other recipes for onions including casseroles, onion rings, and pies.  Yup, you read right: pies!

Each layer of this article has something new to offer, so dive in and learn all there is to know about onions!

Types of Onions

Different onions serve different purposes.  For example, yellow onions are best in stews and soups, while red onions are best when eaten raw, like in salads and salsas.  Meanwhile, sweet onions are perfect for caramelizing.  No matter which onion is your favorite, it's important to know the difference between each and the uses for different types of onions; luckily, we have a page to help you figure that out!

How to Cut an Onion

Once you've decided which onion is best in your dish, learn how to slice and how to chop an onion.  Onions may make you cry, but there's a trick to keeping your eyes dry. You can try cutting under a vent or freezing the onion before cutting. If you have goggles at home, this works too!  To get the smell off your hands, just rub your hands against stainless steel (a bowl, utensils, or even your kitchen sink) under running water... and no more smell!

How to Store Onions

Made your favorite French Onion Soup recipe and have onions leftover? Don't throw them away! Stored properly, onions can stay fresh for longer than you think! Use 'em in a casserole like Lovin' Onions or in a French Onion Bake. Or dice up your leftovers and mix them into homemade Pico de Gallo on taco night, or serve chips with Swiss Onion Dip during a movie or game night!

French Onion Soup Recipe and Other Tasty Onion Recipes

There's something nostalgic about a warm bowl of velvetty french onion soup topped with a piece of sopping bread and covered in melted cheese. Or how about a hot-from-the-fryer plate of Crispy Buttermilk Onion Rings? Or the freshness of red onions in a Summer Garden Salad? Best yet, the perfect marriage of Sweet and Spicy Caramelized Onions. Yum-o!
