Our Old-Fashioned Southern Chocolate Frosting is a glossy frosting that's perfect for topping cakes that you want to fancy up with decorating gel.
What You'll Need
- 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
- 1 (5-ounce) can evaporated milk
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate
- 1 1/4 cups confectioners' sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
What to Do
-
In a small saucepan, combine butter, evaporated milk, granulated sugar, and chocolate squares. Cook over medium-low heat until chocolate has melted and mixture has come to a low boil, stirring frequently. Reduce heat to low and cook 4 to 5 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Remove from heat and add confectioners' sugar and vanilla; mix well. Chill 30 minutes to thicken before using.
Notes
-
This isn't like traditional frosting; it's more of a cross between a glaze and a thick icing.

Think there is a typo with the butter amount. It says 1/4 C. (1 stick). 1/4 C. is actually 1/2 stick of butter.

Did you use evaporated milk or condensed milk? Condensed milk will definitely make it sickly sweet.

We use evaporated milk in this recipe. Condensed milk would be way too sweet.

This is much too sweet. No one in my house can eat it. We had to scrape it off the cake so we could at least enjoy the cake itself.

Y'all must be yankees. This is the filling you have to use to make 7 to 14 layer cakes because the layers are too thin for spread type frosting. It's all we used when I was a child.

So, who is making layer cakes? They show the recipe photo with the icing on a pound cake. In my opinion, it's really a glaze , not a frosting. Yes, I am a Yankee!
