Ham was no stranger to the early Southern settlers. It was so popular 'cause, with little or no refrigeration, cured ham was a safe choice. Today we eat it just because of its super taste!

What You'll Need

  • 1 (7 ½-ounce) can pineapple slices, drained, juice reserved
  • 1 (6-ounce) jar maraschino cherries, drained, juice reserved
  • 1/2 cup firmly-packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 (2- to 2-1/2-pound) ham steak

What to Do

  1. In a small bowl, combine reserved pineapple and cherry juices, brown sugar, and cloves; mix well and set aside.

  2. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add ham and brown 3 to 4 minutes per side.

  3. Add juice mixture to skillet, cover, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, 25 minutes.

  4. Add pineapple slices and cherries; mix well. Cook, uncovered, an additional 8 to 10 minutes, or until sauce thickens and fruit is heated through.

I' going to try this but not sure how long I will cook it. all depends on what type of ham. But it sounds very good

It seems that the ham would be over done cooking it that long. I also have been making it this way.

I've been making our ham steaks like this for years. In no time at all you can duplicate the flavors of a holiday baked ham. When short on time, I also use ground clove and maple syrup, the flavors come out the same and you don't have to pick or push aside the whole cloves. A very quick and satisfying meal...Try the syrup and whole clove then throw the ham steak on the grill to heat, one of my DH favorites. Life gets so busy and fast sometimes you get into a funk as to what to cook. I Love the website, everyone benefits from cheap and easy meals, ideas to spin off from and reminders of meals you haven't had in a long time. Thank you Mr. Food!
