Shepherd's pie is an old English dish traditionally made with ground lamb or mutton, vegetables, and gravy that's topped with mashed potatoes and then baked. This updated slow-cooker version by using ground beef and the convenience of frozen mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables.
What You'll Need
- 1 (22-ounce) package frozen mashed potatoes
- 1 pound ground round
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 (10-1/2-ounce) can French onion soup, undiluted
- 1 (16-ounce) package frozen vegetable mix, thawed
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup (2 ounces) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
What to Do
- Cook potatoes according to microwave package directions.
- Meanwhile, cook beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat 7 minutes, stirring until it crumbles and is no longer pink. Drain; stir in flour.
- Add soup; cook, stirring constantly, 3 minutes or until slightly thickened. Stir in vegetable mix. Spoon mixture into a lightly greased 5-1/2- or 6-quart slow cooker.
- Add salt and pepper to potatoes. Spoon over beef mixture. Sprinkle with cheese.
- Cover and cook on LOW setting 4 hours. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

Pardon my pedantry, but SHEPHERD'S pie MUST be made with lamb! When the same dish is made with beef, it's called COTTAGE Pie instead. (Both are delicious :))

I've heard that before....I will say though when we went to Ireland the term Shepherd's Pie was used onn many menus even when beef not lamb was used to make it......no matter what you choose to call it it's always delicious!!!!

My version of Shepherd's Pie is homemade mashed potatoes, small chunks of butter, canned or fresh cooked corn, chunks of Velveeta cheese, and cooked ground beef. Mix and cook in microwave or pre-heated oven for 20 minutes.

Last week or so I made a Shepherd Pie which I made with Ground Round and took a picture of it and posted it on my facebook... Someone from Ireland told me that what that was Not Shepherd Pie,, but a Cottage Pie. Which there is a difference I have been told. Shepherd Pie is made with Lamb, and Cottage Pie is made from Minced (Ground) Meat(Beef).

I made this recipe with ground turkey and whole potatoes that I boiled and mashed with out the salt and put it in the oven. It was a healthier version and even my picky child loved it.

This is an awesome recipe for Sheppard's Pie. The only different thing I did, instead of using the frozen mix vigie's, I used a 14 oz. can of drained corn. Mr. Food, thank you so much for sharing it with us all.
