There sure are some snotty and rude people on here. They spoil it for the rest of us that were raised to have some manners and respect for others.

How can this be called a "German Chocolate" cake when it contains NO German Chocolate???

Hi there! German chocolate cake was actually invented by Samuel German, hence the name "German Chocolate Cake." :) Enjoy!

This looks like it would be a rather tasty but very sweet cake However it is most emphatically NOT German No German Chocolate Cake is German or even Germanic The original recipe was found on bars of German's brand of sweet chocolate It was a brand of baking chocolate in the th century The recipe for German's Sweet Chocolate Cake was featured on their package promoted in print advertising Eventually the word sweet was dropped from the recipe name Like Baker's Chocolate the brand name was the family name of the people who manufactured it The company was bought up by Baker's brand which was bought by General Foods which was finally bought by Kraft in You can find the original recipe on the kraftrecipies com web site I am have been baking since I was a voracious reader since So when I made my first German's Chocolate Cake with myRead More mother for my th birthday I read the complete package have remembered it all these years As more and more people have come to assume that German Chocolate Cake is an ethnic dessert it has become important to me to share the real story of the cake - which I think is even more interesting as it illustrates the impact cooking advertising had on American life in the first to years of the th century

You are absolutely correct Cindy! Thank you for your comment. :)

Being 78 years of age, I have made many cakes from scratch and boxed mixes. Really can't tell much difference between either. I do know that this cake seems to be the best of both worlds and is always a winner. Besides it looks great also. Just try it and your guests will rave a bout it.

looks yummy I will be frosting the sides with whipped cream. low calorie lol

This is the worst of both worlds; you have to have a cake MIX on hand, but you add so many pantry ingredients to it, you're not really saving any mixing effort by using a mix. May as well spent the time looking for a German Chocolate Cake MIX.

who cares.....a box cake mix can be just as good or better than scratch with a little tweaking.

who cares! It looks good! looks like a good cake for a bake sale. Cakes like this is expensive to buy in the stores. Made the pineapple upside down cake for our church bake sale and it was the first to go. Didn't even get to set it down on the table. It sold that fast. This one looks like it will be the same! Added it to my recipe box!

Can we please have a recipe like this that is actually from scratch - not using cake mix?

Make it from scratch using their guidelines. Does not look too tough to do IMHO.

I will not make anything that is not from scratch

oh and F.Y.I i am supposed to know evevry thing i am called know it all at my school O.M.S when my class mates ask the teacher a question when the teacher can't tell or doesn't know he tells them to come to me and i all ways answer and also correctly and i am only 12 and 13 in 1 month thats sad .

For my culture project i have to look up culture recipes from germany and i get to make it and eat it so shhhhhhhhh don't tell no one else i want the chocolate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I gained weight just reading this, do you know of a recipe for Bourbon Balls, they are no bake and you will get tipsy eating a lot of them...whee!!!

The woman never said anything about it being a recipe from Germany. I have never heard such ignorant, nasty and rude remarks over a recipe. What is you'r problem people ?

Why all the negative comments. Read and just don't make it if it isn't the one you want. I start reading the reviews very interested and the negative, nasty comments turn me off. So what if it isn't a true German cake - doesn't take away the taste.

nothing about this cake is really german !!!!! i am from germany and i'd never have eaten something like that............

This cake is not German. It was first made by a woman in Texas in 1957. The chocolate was created by a man by the name of Sam German for Bakers Chocolate Company in 1852. Just a little info.

It's always fun to learn something new! Thanks for sharing the info.

For that "extra special" German Chocolate Cake I do the following; Make a German Chocolate cake (either from scratch or mix) in two 2 9" round pans. Make the coconut, pecan, carmel frosting (or use canned). One 1/2 pint heavy cream whipped but not sweetened. Mix the frosting into the whipped cream, frost and serve. Keep in fridge. A real treat, but very rich. Mein Grossenmutter Taught me to make it this way. I am 76 so you know the Germans made it like this many, many years ago.

Even though the cake is not of German origin the recipe for the icing that your grandmother made sounds really good and I will try it.

This is a replacement for a true German Chocolate cake. Please do't destroy a Black Forest Cake. You don't know what you are doing.

Your grandmother may have taught you how to make that frosting, but German Chocolate cake has NOTHING to do with Germany. It is merely the brand name of a chocolate maker, Sam German, who is and always was an American. I had a good laugh at how you say the Germans made it that way many, many years ago because they've probably never even HEARD of German chocolate.

Ladies, I was curious about a post that mentioned "Lane Cake". I googled that and there are many. Apparently the original has Kentucky Bourbon in it ! Here is a link to a Lane Cake Recipe with the Cherrys as someone mentioned. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/lane-cake/

can I print all my recipe

sounds good but its just a regular chocolate cake with coconut/pecan frosting! To be a GERMAN Chocolate cake you have to use GERMAN Chocolate to make it right.

This looks awesome! It certainly looks like the "ultimate" with the chocolate cake and icing...and I can't wait to try it. As for the review by brandalla69, why bring up a cake that is nowhere like this one?

Looks really rich- I would use the German chocolate cake mix ( it's a bit lighter chocolate) and skip the chocolate drizzle-its a bit of overkill ! I would like to see a traditional Lane Cake recipe-it also has a similar fillling frosting- on a white cake-but they add halfed marachino cherries to it ! Ohhhhh it's sooo good !

will you share the "Lane Cake" recipe, with the half marachino cherries?

I would love to have the recipe for Lane Cake please share it with us.
